At least in the USA, a primary care or family medicine physician has a total of approximately 10-15 hours of training in musculoskeletal conditions. So, my advice is based solely on the healthcare system in he U.S. I also do not know your mom's symptoms, signs, medical history, or the history of her LBP, so, again, my advice is general. We know from research that bed rest is the worst thing you can do for LBP...it actually makes it worse. Our bodies were made for movement. Physical Therapists are the musculoskeletal experts, and if it was my mom, this is where I would start. In the USA, a patient can see a Physical Therapist without a referral from a physician. Several studies have shown that Physical Therapist are are better musculoskeletal diagnosticians than any other medical clinician, with the exception of Orthopedic surgeons. We are trained to know what belongs in our clinic, and what symptoms are masking as musculoskeletal, and needs to be referred out.
