Studying Medicine At Uni

What do I need to do to study medicine?

Hi. Well, it sounds as though your grades are good enough. Yes, you will most likely need A's to get into med school.

Cambridge are asking AAA for medicine:
http://search.ucas.co.uk/cgi-bin/hsrun/s...

In three of Maths, Bio, Chem, Phys, so your are taking the right subjects. Incidentally, I took those exact 4 subjects, through to A2. They are very fun, really interesting, but a lot of hard work. You could maybe quit one after AS if it was too much.

Edinborough want AAAb. They only REQUIRE biology:
http://search.ucas.co.uk/cgi-bin/hsrun/s...

Imperial college says it wants AAA if doing three subjects, AAAC if doing 4:
http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/ugprospectus/...

Well, all that was from UCAS (.com), I am sure you can look your self as well.

Apparently, oxford is first for medicine, edinborough second, then dundee, then cambridge:
http://browse.guardian.co.uk/education?SearchBySubject=false&FirstRow=0&SortOrderDirection=&SortOrderColumn=GuardianTeachingScore&Subject=Medicine&Go=Go

So, oxford would be the top one! Again, they will be looking for AAA. Oxbridge (oxford and cambridge) are the hardest uni's to get in, as I am sure your aware, so if applying there I would make sure you apply somewhere that will make you an lower offer as well, as a back up. Also bear in mind that you have to complete a seperate application for oxbridge, and your personal statement will have to be taloured towards those uni's. Give me a shout if you want some personal statement help - although mine is for VetMed, I have mine if it would be any use.

You certainly do have to do the BMAT. I did it (I am a vet student, in London), it is hard, but it is meant to be hard. It is really a test to see how well you can think and cope under pressure, and to sort of see how well you are on the slightly 'non-acedemic' side of things. Its because most candidates get AAA, they need some other reason to accept them or not. You will do that in about the November of A2 year. You will have to applied for your uni's by October of that year, I believe. Then, the uni's will get your BMAT results, and use this in a decision as to whether to make you an offer or not. There is more info here:

Well, hope that helps, email me any more q's

Requirements to study medicine in uni?

Becoming a doctor requires more training than most other jobs. It usually takes at least 11 years to become a doctor: 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and 3 years working in a hospital. For some specialties, doctors may have to work in a hospital for up to 8 years before they are trained.

To become a doctor, you should study biology, chemistry, physics, math, and English. It is not easy to get into medical school. You have to do very well in college and on medical school entrance tests.

Students spend most of the first 2 years of medical school in labs and classrooms. They take lots of science courses. They also learn to ask patients the right questions and how to examine them. They learn how to tell what sickness a patient has. In the last 2 years, students work with patients and doctors in hospitals and clinics. After medical school, doctors go to work in a hospital for a few years. They are called residents. To be a resident, you must take a test.

If you want to be a doctor, you should like to help people. You should be willing to study a lot.

You have to know how to talk to sick people. And you should be able to make decisions and handle emergencies.

What is the difficulty of studying medicine in university? How hard is it?

There was a Mathematics teacher of mine in class 10 who told me that medicine is not everyone’s cup of tea. Later I read a quote that ‘Doctors are not made, they are chose’. I completely agree with it.To be a successful medical student you need to have enough confidence, willpower and knowledge. The ones in the top ranks of an university are not the only successful medical student or doctor alone, they may be accompanied by the worse performing student in academics as well.I study at Uzhhorod National University, Ukraine and the subjects which I read are tough and can be confusing at times but with proper planning and skill sets one can master the subject at least to the level of seventy five percent. The subjects which we study in the first year are Anatomy and Histology, may find it too tough but believe me if you have enough knowledge from your secondary school, then you can pass it pretty decently. It is like the alphabets of medicine. In second year we read Bio-Chemistry,Physiology and Micro Biology along with Anatomy and Histology as continous subjects, the level is little furthered here and you get into the real game which we all speak about. With enough preparation you can pass this as well.In the third year, you will have General surgery, Pharmacology, Pathology along with Micro Biology as a continous subject and I would like to let you know that these are not easy subjects. For example, if someone asks what is the remedy for Athletes foot? You should know that it is Oxiconazole. Thousands of drug name like such? How many can a student remember? And then in for foreign students in Ukraine, we have a state exam which includes all these subjects clubbed into a single exam. If you do not pass it, you do not go to the next year as simple as it sounds. From fourth to sixth year we have clinical subjects such as Oncology, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Neurology along with several other clinical subjects with patient interaction in the regional hospital and it only gets more tougher. Finally after getting battered for six years we get the much coveted status of being a doctor. So in simple words it is not easy to become a Doctor but if you posses enough stuff within you, you can. Probably much easier than what I feel.

What is the cost of studying medicine at makerere university plus accommodation and living per year?

For a medical student, I hope you are an international student. You will pay around 2,240000ugx per semester which is equivalent to 700 usd. The academic year has two semesters you will need approximately 1500usd per year. You will pay functional fees and other small fees which will not cost you more than 300usd per year. In accommodation, it depends on the kind of life you want. But I will assume you want a single decent room. That will cost averagely 400–500 dollars per semester. On top that, you need feeding and medical care. The cost of food in kampala is not high especially for a student unless you want to eat in five star hotel but meals should not cost you more than 15 dollars a day. Public transport is available and commonly used. If you wany to be driving, then I won't estimate those costs because I don't know which you will be driving.Hope this helps
