Environmental engineering seeks to address these ramifications through sustainable solutions, which take a multitude of variables into consideration. For example, in water treatment, an environmental engineer will consider the volume flow rate of fresh water into a lake along with the concentration of pollutants. In doing so, she can determine whether the pollutant concentration entering the lake is sustainable. If not, the pollutant can result in problems such as the introduction of invasive species into the lake. Then, the environmental engineer must design a solution that can mitigate the issue presented by the pollutant while assuring the quality of life for society is not decreased by the solution. By taking into consideration environmental impact, environmental engineers can design sustainably while maintaining quality of life for society.
