Tax Filling While Unemployed

Do you file taxes if you are unemployed in Quebec?

Yes. If you reside in Quebec and earned any income you are supposed to file income tax. If you were unemployed for the entire year you may have received income from Employment Insurance (Assurance Emploi), disability or social assistance. Even if you relied entirely on your savings or on someone supporting you, it would still be to your advantage to file your income tax in order to receive various tax credits. These tax credits are basically money in your pocket, so it pays to file your taxes.Being a Quebec resident you have the distinct “pleasure” of being obliged to file income tax twice, federally and provincially, using two distinct forms. Filing in every other jurisdiction in Canada is slightly simpler since you only file federally.

Do I need to file taxes if I was unemployed for all of 2016 and also lived abroad?

You need to file a return only if your income exceeds the maximum amount not chargeable to tax which is 2.5 lakhs for general persons, 3 lakhs for people above age of 60 and 5 lakh for people above age of 80.So it doesnt matter whether you are employed or not. what matters is whether you have income. in case you are unemployed but you are an avid share trader who has capital gains OR you are unemployed but have invested in property from which you have rent or Fd which earn you interest you may need to file returns.

Unemployed, full time college student. Do I need to file taxes?

I'm a full time college student, 20, living with my parents while I attend school. I don't have a job, although I help around the office at my parents' small business when I'm not busy (a lot like I help around the house; doing chores, laundry, etc). My parents pay for tuition, gas, health insurance, books, car insurance, etc, and I depend on them for financial support. I'm not receiving any financial aid from the college, and I have no loans. In return for keeping excellent grades and help around their small business and around the house (chores here and there), my parents give me a $200-$400 allowance + gas money every month. I also get a check from them that goes into my account to pay for my health insurance (it's set up through my checking account, so it's just easier for me to deposit a check and then pay the bill) ($200/mo).

My questions is, do I need to file taxes?

When should I file for CA unemployment?

I was just terminated from my sales job for not meeting sales production requirements (so i am without a doubt ELIGIBLE for unemployment)... I was just wondering how long I should wait to file, or if there is a maximum time from the date of termination that i can file without losing my eligibility.
The other thing i was wondering was concerning the benefit $$. Do they base your benefits from quarterly wages BEFORE, or AFTER taxes? Please include references with your answer if applicable. Thanks!

Filing Unemployment While Working?

You are allowed to earn money while on unemployment. The information that he submits each will ask if he earned any money during the week and how much. As long as he continues to answer that truthfully there won't be any problem.
Depending on how much he earns during the week,he will either get partial or no unemployment.
If he hasn't been tell thing the truth about earning money, I would guess it would even out if he adds it on to a future week (say he earned $150 but hasn't claimed any of it, then next week have him add that money into his unemployment report). The unemployment office receives a quarterly report on earnings, so they probably would never know.

Can I file unemployment and collect 1099 income at same time?

No, this would be unemployment fraud. While you may not be prosecuted ( if this is the first time that it occurred) you'll likely be required to pay back the amount of unemployment you earned while working. You may also have difficulty obtaining unemployment in the future. How they "find out" is that 1099s are often posted with the IRS quarterly. EDD simply checks your name and your SSN against a list from the IRS and they ask you about why you are working and obtaining unemployment.

How will unemployment affect my tax return?

Yes, it becomes taxable income, and since there were no witholdings on it and if you normally receive a refund, you will get much less back, or possibly owe.
