Tell Me About Media And Its Responsibilities Over Common Man

Is the media, as a fourth pillar of democracy, playing its role honestly?

Media has four basic responsibilities as the fourth pillar of democracy. It should tell the truth. It should be unbiased. It should not act to spread propaganda.Moral conditiong of mass.Current situation. It fails on every aspects. Now a days media is telling half the truth and even lies. Authenticity of the news is no more guaranteed. JNU row an example how media houses sold lies or half truths. The real truth of the JNU Kashmiri food stall controversy | IndiaFactsAlmost every media group has ideological or political bias. In many cases they are owned by the party heads. If you observe for 3–4 min you will get to know inclination of channel. Who owns your media? They serve its prejudice and spread propaganda. They start doing media trial. They have become impatient enough to think themselves above judiciary. Trial by media: perverting the course of justiceIn the name of moral policing every now and then opinion building is served. Common man is bomabrded with opinion polls and heavily biased talk shows.Driven by sensationalism and TRP, media house have taken a corporate turn.Courtsey to the media house they have made people like Kanhaiya kumar and Hardik patel an overnight celebrity.News which is TRP generating are shown in loops, while worthy news gets neglected. We can say its selective when it comes to coverage. Assam's floods did not got the required coverage as at that time Pratyusha's suicide was telecasted for TRP.Media houses have stooped so low that they are willing to compromise national security and secrecy. Be it broadcasting 26/11 or questioning surgical strikes. To gain populism and support their vested interests they have started mud slinging on IB, Supreme Court and even Army.I would say this is not all Media's fault. Government is also interfering too much. In the name of censorship they are trying to restrict. And media is bound to resist that. So episodes like blackening the screen or banning a channel have popped up.But everyone or everything is not bad. There are cases where media has done justice to its role in democracy. Nirbhaya case is an example where media's constructive role was able to generate involvement of people in the radical reform the country required.Time will tell whether Indian Media will see itself through the current transition period or not.Hope it does.

How does media affect people and shape their perception of reality?

I think that the media most strongly affects young people, especial social media, and those with very little education, especially those who are isolated from centers of learning or from those who might personally interact with them on different issues. If someone only watches a certain right-wing, bombastic, xenophobic and often racist and sexist news channel, then they begin to believe everything that it reports, even if the news is untrue. Worse yet, they are often whipped into a frenzy over certain issues, such as immigration, women’s rights, weird candidates for political office and so on. They fail to go out and educate themselves, like those who are well-educated tend to do. Rather, they swallow whatever these TV channels and online blogs or tweets spew out, often false and incendiary. Then they end up voting for someone who claims to support their best interests and promises to make things “great” again for them, who then ignores them and threatens to take away their basic necessities such as better wages, healthcare and jobs. They don’t see, through the haze of their belief in all the propaganda, that this guy only supports the interests of the rich—people like him. Also, the media gives the wrong message to young people, such as a frenzy over materialism, saying that they must have the right car, the right clothes, latest gadgets and so on. They spend all their money on those instead of saving for the future. And worse, the media slavishly caters to those who make money off of products that promote the idea of women as sex objects, with things like skin-tight clothing, tons of make-up, messages that focus only on a girl’s body and not her mind, telling them that looking like a Kardashian is the ultimate goal, not getting a good education and a career. It also tells guys that they should only date girls who look like this, rather than creating meaningful relationships.About the only good thing that the media has done (via promoting movies and stars) is make the acceptance of Gays and transgender people more common, inadvertently promoting tolerance.

What social responsibility does media have?

My answer to the question you have asked me is for all kinds of media outlets including social media along with Mainstream Media and others.Media today is THE most powerful pillars of society, especially in today’s world of easy access to information. Majority of us base our views on what we read, hear or see in all forms of media. So, it is no brainer to conclude that MEDIA has ever-highest responsibility towards society.MEDIA influences the way societies operate, dwell, prosper or in worst cases expire! It has the power to do all great things such as:expose wrong doings, surface scams, catch criminals red handed, create awareness about issues at the largest scale, save lives by spreading information at the speed of light, build consensus on the most complex issues by educating people, bring about radical changes in the education & medical fields by helping people across the globe collaboratemotivate people to do great things by sharing real life success stories, entertain people to live a healthy and happy life…. and many more..At the same time it also can:Spead tremenedous amount of negativity and hatred in the name of religion, political polarization, caste, nationality - and many such belief systemsMake people feel insecure and inferior by showing-off and objectification (celebrities are doing that on Instagram & other places since ever)Spread false propaganda and skew the usual discourse in societytake people away from the values and make them believe that materialism is the ultimate way of life (vested interests of-course)Falsely influence people by snooping on them, playing with their minds and feeding them with stuff that they cannot deny and eventually fall for it to take it to be true (something that Cambridge Analytica did - am sure many more would be doing that)With all that said, it is up to the society at large to make best or worst use of Media - it itself cannot do anything.MEDIA is a powerful tool just like NUCLEAR POWER - it’s up to us to use it - for the better or otherwise!P.S. I am deliberately avoiding to share any references here as it would again become a case of influencing reader’s mind to believe that something is wrong! I leave it to the readers to understand and infer!Do share and upvote if it resonates with you. Also share your thoughts on this topic!Cheers!MANAV LALOTRAFacebook page: Manav's Space

Do the media think white people are more important than black people?

When the media shows outcomes of black violence, liberals scream unfair potrayal of blacks, so exactly what will it take to make you happy?

What are the reasons that road accident victim in India are denied help by fellow citizens?

This was all over the media a couple of months back:Karnataka: Onlookers click pictures as accident victim bleeds to deathHad the accident victim been transported to the hospital a little earlier, there might have been a chance that he's still be alive. The worst part is that passerbys were clicking pictures and filming videos of the victim bleed, rather than helping him.It seems so absurd, to read about such incidents; but when the number of such stupidities are on the rise and is costing people their lives, we must realise that we're completely ignoring some deep seated societal misconceptions. Some of them are:Our fear for law enforcement officers- it's a sad truth, but the police are extremely infamous in our nation. The media also have portrayed them as corrupt, lazy and good for nothing bums who are getting fat off the tax payers' money. This irrational fear, prevents an innocent passer-by from taking any initiative.Lack of awareness about what to do in such patients. There is no way, a passer by can know whom to call/what to do, in case of an accident. There is no equivalent to the USA's 911 in India. Not our problem attitude: I know the struggle of a common man in our country. But by not assuming any responsibility when the situation arises will not help anyone in anyway. We must strive to set an example to coming generations about making the right decision, not the easy decision. This can be overcome by actually appreciating any person who takes a step forward in such situations, rather than grill them with questions. The media should also highlight the positive aspects of Indian police, to alleviate the apprehension of the common man.The requirement of a national emergency number is prudent now more than ever. Government must translate its plans into actions and make the number functional ASAP.Provision of basic information to people in schools/ institutions/offices for sensitisation purposes. People should know basics like checking for pulse/ respiration, at the very least. Most importantly, as citizens of this nation,we need to change our attitude towards the police and start assuming responsibilities.

Why do so-called national medias or voices of India, like Times of India/Republic fail to bring out the fallacy of the NDA government as they were aggressive against the UPA? Don't they realize they have a responsibility to speak for the common man?

In most cases, all media houses do support the right thing. In cases of crimes like rape, murder, terrorism, etc. media houses like Times of India and Republic do their job well of reporting and highlighting the issues and put pressure on the government. When it comes to politics, all media houses take sides because they cannot go against their investors. These media houses get money from political parties to make sure these media houses have a positive image of the party while reporting. While according to you, TOI and Republic are pro BJP, there are many media houses which are against BJP like NDTV, Mint, Wire, etc.Coming back to the common man, there is no single voice of the common folk in our country. Each and every person has a different political view. Some people are extreme left, some people are extreme right, and there is a huge grey area in between where most people have their opinions i.e. neither left, nor right. Most people do not care what happens in political circles as long as nothing hurts their well being. We should also understand the fact that political parties are also made up of humans and hence the political parties are also not perfect. Just like a normal human being, politicians are a little bit ambitious and want to get into power for which they put in extra efforts and make false promises to people just to get the votes. Then the politicians after coming into power realize their limitations and fail to deliver on the promises. This is basic human nature and each and every politician in the world does the exact same thing. UN - the most powerful political organization in the world is not perfect. They have countries like China and Saudi Arabia on the UN Human Rights Council.

How are women exploited/degraded in the media?

Anyway, it is completely true that women in, for example, pornography and rap videos choose to do so.
I would never support banning porn, or modelling, or rap videos- whatever.

However, it really irritates me that women are objectified to a MUCH higher degree than men are. It is true that both men and women are objectified in film, television and music videos to an extent. However, and this is especially true of things like music videos, women are constantly the objects whereas men are the enjoyers (is that even a word?) of said objects. It's vastly annoying. I really don't have a problem with sexuality or nudity, but it should work both ways.
You will almost never see a scantily clad guy in a music video, but scantily-clad women are commonplace. Why? Women enjoy looking at men's bodies just as much as men enjoy looking a women's bodies.

As I said, everyone is objectified to some extent by the media. It is simply to a much higher degree for women. I think that is quite sexist.

And just to reiterate, I don't believe that women are forced into the business, nor do I believe that they should be forced out of it. I just think that if sexuality and nudity are going to be displayed, there should be some sort of equality for who is displaying it.

@College Phile: We'll probably never know, will we? Which proves my point exactly.

What is the importance of print media?

Newspapers are one of the best platforms for conveying information due to cheap medium, easy accessibility and also extended reach as well as high frequency of publication.Today, in this ultra modern world, the role of media and particularly of print media has been augmenting day by day.Print Media has created awareness among the people regarding their rights and duties and it is nicknamed as fourth estate by news monger.ROLE OF PRINT MEDIAThey are powerful vehicle for propaganda. The common man finds the leaves of thought form the newspapers so that he can formulate his own opinions, ideas and judgment about the issues that press the current political, economic and social scenario.our constitution to has given right to freedom of expression and free press in the countrywe all know newspapers role in our freedom and revolutions all over the worldPrint media also works as a bridge between the government and the people. People get to know about the latest policies of the government and it also builds up the public opining, there like, disliking or demands. In fact, Newspaper is voice of the people in any country.PRINT MEDIA VS ELECTRONIC MEDIAThere has a worldwide growth of the print media even after the emergency of the electronic media. There has been an increase in the circulation of newspapers around the world even after the emergence of electronic media and the internet. The newspaper does play a very important role in the working of any democracy. Thus, we see that despite the rise of electronic media to prominence, it has failed to dislodge print media form its Advantage position.WAY FORWARDPeople involved in this profession should realize the massive responsibility they should and sacredness of the duty that they perform. They should avoid personal bias and prejudice to cold their good sense.Print Media should also try to broaden the public view by generating interest and awareness about international events and not to be confined to region or country.Print Media still remains the most common means of creating public awareness and it will continues to be so even in the time to come . Hence, with time we need to be more responsible, discursive and vigilant as readers so as to discourage irresponsible press and create conducive environment for the formation of a responsible and mature Print Media.a newspaper is not just for reporting the news as it is,but to make the people mad enough to do some thing about it.
