The Best First Car For Me

What is the best car to first own?

I am 19 and I have just gotten my drivers license, me and my boyfriend are searching for a car and I have been wanting something that is more low-end rather than him who is wanting something High-end, I have been considering cars such as Chevy Malibu,Ford,Toyota but my boyfriend wants a car like Audi A7,bmw, I just don’t see myself owning a luxury car as my first one. I also can’t imagine the maintenance on luxury cars..I’m in NO WAY whatsoever a professional when it comes to cars so please take this easy on me. I have more than enough money in my savings to be able to afford luxury but I just don’t want to have any financial problems with it in the future, I also live in the Midwest where the roads get bad in the winter so a AWD is a must.
If anyone can explain what is the best car to own as a first car and dumb it down for me it would be much appreciated.
Thank you in advance(:

What would be a good first car?

If it’s for a guy then a Nissan 300zx z32 NA. Why? It’s fun, it’s mildly fast, ton’s of aftermarket support, timeless design, decently hard to fix so they don’t get overwhelmed if they get a complicated car after, it’s built like a tank, rwd because you know they’re going to go to a empty parking lot with friends on a Friday night and have fun. Gives them the fun of a convertible and a hardtop. Buy a facebook one for like $3000 and put liability on it so if they crash they either fix it themselves or oh well. (Currently owning)If you want a truck then just do any old ram(Currently owning 2003), but if they want something weird then a 1984 Honda acty. It’s a mini truck from japan so automatically it’s something that everyone would talk about, it’s super small so it fits anywhere, 4wd for taking it off road, can hold a few hundred pounds of weight so it can take a bit, when the engine dies just throw in a motorcycle engine, it’s super slow until a turbo hayabusa engine is in it, AM only radio which can be changed for like $100. At their high school it’s the talk of the town with just how strange it is, if they’re a band kid they can fit anything in it, use it for water jugs for football, carry kids across campus, go on curbs if needed, park it on the grass.(Job’s fleet car, we have 5 right now)If it’s for a girl then plain and simple na or nb miata. It’s cute, its slow, its cheap, they’re everywhere, easy to fix, only one friend, convertible, small to fit in the mall parking lot. Another option is a 04–06 chrysler sebring. It’s still decently reliable, big(like land yacht size), 4 seats, big trunk, stylish, cheap. (owned(Holds 2 marching podiums, three marching tubas, 4 trombones, 9 trumpets, and 4 people just with the top down))EXTRAS: Jeep cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, Civic, 240sx, Police interceptor crown vic(the lamps, intercom, and a sheriff's hat is enough explanation), police charger( same reason), and any tacoma.

What is the best first car for my teen, for $100 K USD? He is paying for it. He wants to ask me what I would get personally, since I'm paying for everything else, and am matching one dollar to each dollar he makes.

Can I just say something? People - even rich people - who spend 100k, hell who even spend 20K for their teenager's car ought to be be in the old fashioned pillories, so folks can throw rotten fruit and old tomatoes at them. You don't want to spend that much money on a teenager, because you are sending the wrong message. The message you should be sending is, if you want a nice car, you have to buy yourself one. You have to earn it.But you want them to be safe.Buy them a used Volvo. Volvos are built like tanks. And they are pretty good cars. And they will usually go to 250K, no problem. But, in my humble opinion only, even if you are rich enough to spend 100k -hell even 20k - for your teenager's car, YOU SHOULDN'T! You are spoiling your kid. This is where parents who do things like this belong:Update: I see the question has been changed. Now the parent says the child is paying for the car, he just wants advice.Oh really. And where did the "child" get this money from? Trust fund? And whose money was that?I stick by my original answer. Spending 100K for a car is asinine, and countenancing it is bullshit - in my opinion. I remember a news story about Donald Trump getting furniture and things for his daughter when she started college - I think the Trumps were spotted at Target. I would bet that his answer would pretty much mirror mine.

Should I buy a used car as my first car?

It depends on how you plan to use it, where you live, where do you work, how much do you drive, your finances and many more variables.I see many people here almost forcing you to buy a used car because everyone assumes that you will “learn from it”, “maintain it”, “dent it”, “learn to appreciate luxury” etc. and one should buy a new car only when one has had enough experience with a used one. I get where that’s coming from, but it’s not necessary that you have the same needs/experiences as others. One usually tends to be careful and responsible with a brand new car, and careless with a used car, and that’s where you hear these stories about scratches/dents. Its psychological. When I graduated and started a 40-hr a week job, I got a new Toyota Camry. I got my driving license and insurance just two days before I bought the car. Not that I didn’t know how to drive, as I had driven before but on the other side of the road and with a manual transmission. I really needed a car at the time especially for work. Here is what I had in mind:Warranty. My time is precious, I didn’t want to keep checking all issues of my car (brakes/tires etc) and wanted something that wouldn’t cause me inconvenience on the highway, which might happen with used cars.I needed a car for 10 or maybe more years, and getting a new would surely last me that long if well maintained. Something that wouldn’t let me down, so that I could afford something like a used BRZ/FR-S alongside for the weekends.I needed something that would run with as little maintenance as possible, nothing much from regular oil changes, tire rotation etc.4 doors, spacious interior, great leg room, and somewhat decent on mileage (30+mpg at least). Also keep in mind that you can get new cars for 0 percent interest, whereas used cars come with interest if you buy from a dealer, or you need to pay cash. I didn’t have cash at the time, so I simply had no other option.50,000 miles so far on my very first car, and not a single issue, nor a single chip or a dent.Yes you can get by with a used car as well, that will save you a lot of money. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you will “learn” something out of it.

Is a Tesla good enough to be one's first car? If yes, which one?

Yes, it is.How do I know? It was my first car.First off, I obviously don’t agree with the fact that your first car has to be a clunker. I think this is just an argument for people who don’t like to break tradition even though there is no logic behind it. Now let's talk about the car and ownership.I purchased the car the day after I got my learners permit. If youth isn’t an issue for you, skip this next part. You cannot test drive the car. You have to be 25 to test drive the vehicle. However after showing real interest in the car a Tesla salesperson will happily do their best to accommodate you.The same applies when dropping the car off at Tesla Service. You cannot get a loaner vehicle, so I hope you have a ride.Next, there's the attention of a young person driving an expensive car. It gets old, but the car is worth it.Next, the traction control is incredible. As a novice driver, driving in slush, sleet, rain, etc. The car has probably saved my life. While on the topic of saving lives, the car has a 5-star safety rating in every category. Perfect for a new driver.Autopilot and Autopark are great despite the recent bad press.Last but certainly not least, this car is insanely easy to drive. Unless you’ve experienced it for yourself, you won’t understand. The car is truly idiot proof. All in all, I think it has been a great first car for me.

What do you recommend for a first car for a 18 year old?

It completely depends on your budget and your 18 year old. Personally, my first car was an old Porsche Boxster (roughly $20k) and that car has saved my life countless times, the reaction speed of the car has allowed me to get out of tight situations unscathed and the fact that it was a bright red convertible of an expensive brand meant that when I did something stupid in traffic people REALLY tried to avoid me (no one wants to pay over $10k in repairs.) Furthermore the braking is unparalleled and the acceleration (surprisingly used more often to keep the guy behind me from crashing into me during a lane change than for street races) was fantastic. However, that’s a 200$ oil change if you don’t do it yourself and a 16mpg-premium-only car.It might be more practical to get a couple years old Honda which is really safe and well down it’s depreciation curve. This is because it’s still a nice car and practically new but it won’t be a huge loss in the circumstance that something bad does happen.I think virtually any car can be a good first car. If you get a huge car you’ll get really good at parking huge cars for example. You really end up working with whatever you got until you get really good at driving it. But it’s always going to be nicer driving a BMW five series than an ages old Ford ranger and one will always be significantly more expensive.

Is a minivan a good first car for a teen?

So I'm 17 and just got my license and I'm an excellent driver, according to myself and anyone who's ever rode in a car with me...My parents are going to give me their minivan which is a Honda Odyssey 2007. Not that I'm unappreciative of them giving me a car for free, but I wonder if this is safe? Since it's such a large car would it be safer to drive a sedan like a Civic or something? thanks in advance
