The Discovery Of Dna Structure

Who discovered the structure of DNA?

James D. Watson and Francis Crick were the ones who published what is accepted as the first accurate structure of DNA. Go to Wikipedia and search for DNA. Scroll down to the History section. Or click the link in the source section below.

What two scientis discovered the structure of dna?

DNA was first identified and isolated by Friedrich Miescher and the double helix structure of DNA was first discovered by JAMES WATSON and FRANCIS CRICK

Many biologists feel that the discovery of DNA structure is the most significant biological discovery of this?

they say that because that is what they work with. an archaeologist might say the greatest discovery was 'lucy' fossil of early humans. It's not so much what we discover that is great, but what we do with the discovery that is significant.

How did Erwin Chargaff discover the structure of DNA?

The actual formula or theory postulated by Chargaff was that the ratio of nitrogenous bases in a double stranded DNA are constant and equal to one.A+G/C+T = 1

Why is the discovery of the structure of DNA so important?

It has been argued that the discovery of DNA as well as our understanding of its structure and functioning may well be the most important discovery of the last century. The effect of the discovery of DNA on scientific and medical progress has been enormous, whether it involves the identification of our genes that trigger major diseases or the creation and manufacture of drugs to treat these devastating diseases. In fact, the identification of these genes and their subsequent analysis in terms of therapeutic treatment has ultimately influenced science and will continue to do so in the future.

How did politics play a role in the discovery of the dna structure?

In May of 1952 Linus Pauling was to go the Royal Society meetings in London, but he was denied a passport by the U.S. State Department because of McCarthyism suspicions for his anti-nuclear weapons proclamations. Some suggested he might be a communist sympathizer. Peter Pauling, Linus' son, comes to Cambridge and discusses his father's January 28, 1953 published model of DNA, not unlike the first Watson/Crick earlier incorrect version that was criticized by Franklin. It proposed a 3 stranded helix with the bases on the outside.

Had Pauling been allowed to visit the UK - things may have turned out differently.

How did politics play a role in the discovery of DNA structure in the 1950s?

I don't think it did.

Watson and Crick , stole the idea of a single helix from Pauling via his son, and stole some x-ray crystallography data from Rosalind Franklin , then they went to the pub and drank and worked it out.

They should have shared with the other folks I think.

Why was the discovery of the helical structure of DNA important?

A regular structure demonstrates that information could be stored in a predictable manner and transferred from one generation to the next. Also, it showed that almost all living organisms had similar methods for storing and passing on genetic information (a strong clue that we are all descended from a common life form which used nucleic acids to store and pass on information).
