What exactly went wrong between Narendra Modi and Lal Krishna Advani?
After the Gujrat riots of 2002, Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee, the then Prime-minister of India, had publicly admonished Mr. Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister, of the state, to do his rajdharama. Apparently the state failed in its duty to give protection to its muslim citizen for their life and property. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee was extremely hurt and upset. Mr. Lal Krishan Advani was the Deputy Prime-minister of India and mentor of Mr. Narendra Modi. It was decided to remove Mr. Modi for failure of the state in protecting the citizen. But it was staunch support of Mr. Advani that allowed Mr. Modi to tide over the crisis.The elections to the parliament in 2004 were held under the leadership of Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee by the NDA. The NDA lost the elections and UPA under Mrs. Sonia Gandhi won the elections and formed the Government with Sardar Manmohan Singh as PM. The next elections were contested by the NDA under the leadership of Mr. Lal Krishan Advani and under leadership of Mrs Sonia Gandhi by the UPA. UPA was again successful and Sardar Manmohan Singh continued as PM.But various scams during its second term, dented the image of UPA and there was palpable anger in the public, which any seasoned politician could gauge. So it was expected that there could be a change of government in 2014 elections and anybody leading it into the 2014 elections for NDA would taste success. Both Mr. Narendra Modi and Mr. L. K. Advani sensed an opportunity. However, the RSS did not want to give Mr. Advani another chance as a leader of NDA after his failure in 2009. Mr. Modi wanted to be the face of the BJP as the Prime-ministerial candidate, which Mr. Advani opposed. Advaniji expected that Modi's candidature would not be acceptable to most of the allies in the NDA, because of his perceived role in the 2002 riots. Mr. Advani put up a stiff opposition to the proposal that Mr. Modi be declared the Prime-ministerial candidate in case NDA scored a majority before going into the election. Advaniji wanted the leader of NDA to be decided after the elections. But Mr. Modi prevailed and had his way. During that period BJP youth wing held demonstrations at the residence of Mr. Advani, carrying placards, “Dada jee maan jao.” These placards mocked Advaniji as granddad and requested him to please yield. This was the break point between the mentor and the protege. It is said Modiji neither forgets nor forgives.

What is the problem between Sonia Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi?
The History starts from late 70’s. You know Congress during Indira Gandhi’s time? She was the prime minister from 1966 till 1977 till when both of his sons got married. Elder son, Rajiv Gandhi married Sonia Gandhi in 1968 (she was from Italy, where they fell in love). Younger son, Sanjay gandhi married Menaka gandhi in 1974. Only, Sanjay gandhi was keen in politics with his mother, Rajiv kept his distance with politics and enjoyed pilot as his profession. The twist came after sudden demise of Sanjay in plane crash. Indira called Rajiv to come to help him to fill the gap of Sanjay. We can just speculate but this may be the tipping point for Menaka to part away with her mother in law. Menaka was not called for help, in contrast, She called the son living in other country. Menaka was further sidelined after Rajiv took interest in Politics and becomes shadow of his mother in 2nd term PMship (1980 to 1984). It looks like Menaka is also keen in politics and don’t want to just housewife. During this time, BJP (the new party then) may have lured her to come out openly against her brother-in-law Rajiv after death of Indira gandhi. She had no feud with sister-in-law Sonia until she became president of Congress in 1997, when they became political enemy. Moreover, their ego clashed when they both wanted their sons to be more influential in Gandhi family.

No, not strictly, but the U.S. Foreign Service (FS) personal system is far closer to the military system than we see with the Civil Service (CS). The FS uses “rank in person,” whereas the CS uses “rank in position.” The military uses rank in person. As an example, a staff sergeant or first lieutenant serving as platoon sergeant or company commander would hold the authority of the position, but not the rank or pay until promoted. The FS is the same way. Thus, rank is independent of position, and is handled through promotion boards that occur at given periods of time in rank ("time in class” for FS). In the CS, to be promoted, one generally needs to apply for and receive a position at the higher grade to obtain the promotion. In the FS, one is “paneled” or selected independently of rank, and if selected below the rank of the position (a “stretch), the employee will assume the position with the authority and duties, but not the higher pay or grade/rank. In the CS, one can even be temporarily promoted with higher pay if put in a position above grade. That would not happen in FS. We can also drift into military “frocking” (wearing the higher rank with the authority and responsibilities but without the pay or actual promotion), but that is a complicated subject that differs by military service - and doesn't occur in the FS.Also, the FS employee evaluation system and promotion board system are strikingly similar the military system, with narrative and “reading between the lines” an important aspect.For those that know the National Guard (NG), that system involves both aspects. A2A. I’m going to keep this really short, as I want to meet up with friends soon. I’ll say for the moment that it’s not getting to really know the other half of the country, and too often making it very difficult for the other half to really know them. Good people are the real majority in the country, but there’s too much ignorance, prejudice, propaganda, anger, and extremism on “both sides” to get together the way we desperately need to.So, with that, I’m heading for my pub, where all are welcome, as long as you stay respectful of the other guys. Given “In vino veritas”, it takes some practice.EDIT additions: OK no bites, so I’m resuming a few hours and a gallon of beer later. We (Mark, Jerry, Brian, David, myself, and a couple of other guys) had a nearly two hour rapport session (noting for the kids that that’s the root of “rap” which is quite different, more often electing hostility in both fans and haters). We discussed current politics, the nature of God in religion, best recs for handling COPD, how to deal with handicapped parking slot cheaters, military weaponry, the best beans for cooking (esp. in chili), but never got around to sex or gender issues, or racism. Maybe next time. My main man for my education and thought in race matters is Tony, a black granddad who also is a fine conga musician, and comes in like early Monday afternoons. ‘Got my attention for being the only guy I’ve met in years that knew who R. Crumb was, and liked him. These guys are the best crew I’ve hung with since nearly endless bar talks in grad school, with med, business, engineering, and psych people who could drink past the usual limit and still make sense. If or when the drama people came in, things became unstable. Instability isn’t necessary a bad thing, either, especially if someone knows their Shakespeare. Have to watch out for the Irish, though…So if I was the tooth fairy, I would expand that to at least the national scale. Those that can’t handle it can go back on the street and pout and shout.
