Why does my DVD player say "unknown disc"? How do I fix it?

It could be that the player is wearing out. The Unknown disc problem might be a sign that the laser has worn out, probably due to using cheaper components in the construction. Now-a-days players use cheap components and they don't last. Players no longer have cooling fans in them, which means they have to rely on air cooling. If your DVD player is not in a very well ventilated place, it could be dying because of heat damage. In any event, cleaning is extremely unlikely to help it, but you could try that as a last resort. You can try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaner disc. If you don't mind taking the player apart to some extent, you can take the outer shell off and try cleaning the lens directly (but carefully) with a good swab and cleaning solution. Sometimes, the only thing causing a player to stop recognizing discs is a dirty laser lens. Take a cotton swab and dip it in alcohol/spirit/after shave. Make sure shake it off until the swab is damp, but not dripping wet. Gently use it to clean the lens. Then use the other end to dry the lens off. Remain gentle at all times.Additionally you can try to calibrate the lens using the 2 presets as in the image below. Use a Philips screwdriver to turn the pots counter-clockwise in very small amounts until the DVD starts recognizing the disks. If that doesn't work then it could be a problem with the lens its self, Or could be a problem with the power supply to the laser.Still having issues, as i final tip, you can try changing the lens or the entire Lens + CCM Unit. Changing the CCM unit eliminates the possibility of a problematic motor/s causing the issue. Just don't be surprised if you have to buy a new player.

How can .avi files play on a DVD player?

As far as we know, newer DVD players that are DivX- certified(with the DIVX symbol on it) can read data DVDs with an AVI file encoded in DivX codec. While, if you got some AVI files encoded with Xvid that wouldn't be supported. An easy solution I’ve worked is to convert AVI to DVD player supported format. Brorsoft’s AVI Video Converter is recommended here. It can fast convert all kinds of AVI files to DVD player compatible DivX . And with its built-in video editor, you can trim, crop, merge video clips as you want.BTW, if your DVD player is not DivX supported, you can burn your AVI files to DVD.How to Burn AVI files to DVD with Nero:Basically there are two different ways to burn an .avi-file on DVD with Nero for play in a DVD player:1. If you have a DVD-player that is capable of playing avi-files, you can simply use Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express and burn a data disc with the .avi-file untouched.2. However, for NeroVision, I suppose you don't want a data disc with an avi-file but a "real" Video-DVD in compatible DVD-format. For that you will need Nero Video. In the "Create & Export" menu, choose DVD- DVD-Video, then import the .avi-file and follow the instructions. You can either create a menu and chapters, or just make a simple DVD without menu and one video. In the final step, NeroVideo will either write the necessary DVD structure on a DVD or to a folder on your hard disk. If you used NeroVision before, it should be easy for you because NeroVideo is very similar.

What is the best DVD player to play MKV files?

Yes, you can play it, but need to meet some standards first.MKV is a container. Inside of it, you can place a video codec. Most common video codecs in MKV are: x264/h264 and Xvid/Divx.Dvd players can only recognize Xvid/Divx codecs so far (aside from the dvd codec itself). To do so, the DVD player must have a DivX logo in front. Otherwise, the DVD player won’t be able to recognize it.So… MKV with x264 or h264 don’t work on dvd players.Mkv with Xvid are really rare and decreasing, so its a very little chance you can find one fitting your needs… UNLESS you prepare for yourself. This means, you enconde ANY other codec and create your own Mkv video with Xvid codec inside. Which by the way, will be exactly the same as AVI.Also remember, ALL videos of any kind, can only work in dvd player under 848x576 resolution. So, I you have a 1280x720, it won’t work even if it’s a xvid video. In bluray players MKV can be played with X264, h264, xvid and divx codecs. Only restriction for this… they MUST be a 8bit video. 10 bit video can’t be played.

There is not enough space to burn this compilation to disc- Nero Vision?

Recently I burned an avi file (actually two), to a standard DVD-R using Nero Vision 4. But now when I try to burn only one avi file that is only about 789 mb, I am having problems. The Nero Vision bar says 4.36 of 4.37, good. After almost 3 hours of encoding, the disc pops out saying, there is not enough space to burn this compilation to disc, please insert another disc that has enough space. I have tried more than 5 times with different methods. Has anyone ever had this problem, and how do you fix it. By the way I am using Nero Vision 4 and Nero Startsmart 7. All help is appreciated

If i burn a .avi file to a dvd will it work in my dvd player?

Good question before you go to any DVD burning software. There are two kinds of burning: data disc and real DVD disc. If you want to play the DVD on home DVD player, you will need a DVD burning software. That's the whole point. What I use is a DVD Creator which works great on burning AVI to DVD. Good luck.
