When does Lord of the Rings Online take place?

Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) takes place at the same time as the first two books of the Lord of the Rings trilogy ... at least, so far! The game is still going, and the developers have stated their intentions to expand all the way to the end of the third book, at least. I'm sure that if the game is still popular - and making money - after they reach the end of the third book they will probably expand the game into the various epilogues.

As for whether you should read the books before playing - I'd say that it's fine as long as your reading keeps pace with where you are in the game. It'll give you a better sense for the characters to have read the scenes before you play them. Also, you'll get a lot of references that NPCs (non-player characters, or computer-operated characters) make in the game. It will be a deeper experience and you'll enjoy it more. Kind of like when you read a book before you see the movie - you know the backstory better, you have more depth on the characters, etc.

LOTRO is a lot of fun, and it has the benefit of being free-to-play for the first 25-30 levels. If you get through those areas and you still like the game, you'll need to spend a little money to purchase additional zones, or you can subscribe and get access to the whole game. Subscription is a little too costly for me, so I wait for sales to buy Turbine Points and game expansions, and I've enjoyed the game just as much, if not more, than I would have if I subscribed. Plus, it means I can set the game down for a few months (as I did recently) and come back to it, and not be out any money! It's a lot better than WoW in that respect, plus I like the lore of LOTR a lot better.

Enjoy LOTRO and the books!

Which is better Runes of Magic or Lord of the Rings Online?

I played both and got to level 8 on Lord of the Rings Online.I like lotro graphics because its way more relistic than rom.But rom has a duel class system which i think is very cool. Also rom has different mounts not only horses but lotro has the abilitiy to buy mounts or stuff without paying a cent.On rom i got to level 7 and hate how you have to craft items and quests but in lotro you dont you already know it.I like the crafting system in lotros very good is what i hear people say but i never tryed it.I tryed rom's crafting system it sucks. In rom there is a housing system and you can have a bank.In lotro there is a housing system too but i dont know what level you have to be.they both have a pet system but lotro only has 5 pets i think and rom has a bunch.Rom also has a good pvp is what i heard and they said lotro doesnt but i think its cool. They both have cool dungeons and cool places but i like lotros places better because there is snowy places rainy places you can be a chicken lol!!!!!! I also like how its such beautful place. The wrost part about lotro is its camera it sucks!!! Runes of Magic is more of a pay to play because to beat bosses and pvp you have to buy stuff with really money which lotro you dont have to pay a cent because the crafting system changes everything. I can download both but i want to stay with one.Plz Answer!!!What do you Think!!! Thx for who ever answers!!!
