Do you have a story about a Saint?
This isn't really a story about a saint, but when I was about to leave my crazy abusive husband and also worried about my son, I had a dream that I was sitting on a bench, and a man came and sat next to me. I started to notice little spots of blood coming through his suit and getting larger, and he said to me "Don't worry, it will be ok," but he meant that I would be ok, not that I shouldn't worry about him. And just before I woke up, I realized it was Saint Sebastian talking to me, bleeding from where he was shot with arrows. I'm not a Catholic, but it was the most comforting dream I've ever had.

What is an experience that you've had only because you learned a second language?
Not my story, but my son's story.You need some background, I have unusual children. Daughter was at the University and wanted to do a year abroad. She does not do languages very well so she made a list of all exchange programs that were taught in English. She then ranked them and chose the one she thought would be the biggest challenge.She chose South Africa, so she lived in Durban for a year.She lived in dorms where she was the only non black person. All the white kids lived at home. She also stands 5 feet, 2 inches.We had to go see her, but that is another post.Son is sandwiched between two strong willed females. His defense is being passive agressive.When it was time to choose a foreign language, my wife suggested Spanish. We live in California where Spanish is the secondary language and in certain places, the primary language.So son signs up for French.He got pretty good and continued to take French classes at the university.When he graduated from the University, my wife and I asked him what he wanted as a graduation present. Without any hesitation, he said, “I want to go visit my sister in Africa.” Of all the things in the world, he wanted to visit his sister.So we sent him to Africa. But because of his sister's classes, he would visit Backpackers (hostel) during the week.He entered a Backpacker in Swaziland, Africa.In the common room were 2 young French woman speaking French. Son greeted them in French, and introduced himself.As he was checking in, one of the women said, “He’s cute, and he speaks French”.She is now his wife. They have been married for 12 years, lived in Portland for 10 years and are now living in France with their 2 sons.All because he chose French and not Spanish.
