The Source Of Income To Album

Is labor the ultimate source of all wealth?

Generating wealth by buying land and letting it appreciate is a form of labor. It was mostly intellectual labor; but something created the base wealth that paid for the land.

Simon Cowell made $68 million as producer of Susan Boyle's debut album. Do you think he was worth that? Why does he make that much when some other producer only makes $10k or $1mil or even $10 mil? Because his labor is worth that much on the market. He parlayed her voice and talent into the biggest debut album in the history of recorded music. I don't think Johnny Jam or Timbaland or even Rick Rubin could have done it.

And what about Donald Trump? You think he didn't hump his rear end in the beginning of his career? The difference between him and the guy on the production line is that Trump learned when to get off the line and march to the beat of his own drummer.

The government is something thought of as the source of wealth---by people who think national wealth is a static number, or one that is created by the production of money. But it takes the production of goods before money can be minted or printed. It can only print enough to keep inflation and deflation at zero. The amount depends on the amount of production created by labor.

In employee-owned factories, even one of the employees must be at the top as CEO or COO, so he/she is not going to be found on the production line. Someone must always be at the top, but if they fail in that position, they will be out like BP CEO Tony Hayward.

What are musical artists' major sources of income? Is it always enough to support their needs?

I teach keyboard and harmony&composition at a school for DJs and electronic music producers, have some private piano and singing students, and did a weekly music session at a kindergarten for some months (my current degree is in Choral Conducting and Musicianship Training, and we have pretty extensive education and training in working with young children).I also sing and play concerts on occasion, and though I'm on a composition sabbatical, I've done some arranging/orchestration work. It's not enough for me to move out on my own yet, especially since I don't have a contract for any of this, so tomorrow I could have no work at all. Some people only teach for the regular income, but I've always wanted to be a teacher as well as a musician, so ideally I'd get some Composition and Choir classes at a public conservatory - that would make me very happy, since it'd be more regular, long-term employment and would thus allow me the peace of mind to focus on my musical career.I think the best way to help is to help people accept that music costs money, and to go for professionals. Want someone to teach your kids music? Don't ask the next-door teenager, get a certified professional who has training and experience in both music and pedagogical theory and practice. Want someone to play at your venue? Accept that good musicians are worth good money, and what would be a lot of money for a teenage band (good times) or other instrumental ensemble is not acceptable for someone who has to pay taxes, social security, and living expenses. For composers specifically, people have to know that we exist. That is really the root of the problem, and other solutions aren't sustainable without it being addressed.

Does GI Bill count as a source of income for purpose of affidavit of support?

I had to look into this myself when I married outside the country. Unfortunately, no. =/ For the purposes of determining income and wealth in immigration, the GI Bill doesn't count.

How Much Do Artists Make Per Album Sold?

I was just reading on wikipedia about Pro Tools - GZA, and he said once he paid $150,000 for a beat, and it made me wonder:

How much do artists get paid per each album sold?

(If you are just going to guess and say around $2 - $3 don't say anything, i'd appreciate it if you could back it up with sources.)

Why do artists release singles after albums?

Singles promote albums. You have the first single from the album, which usually comes before the album release. Then the string of singles come after the album.

But I know what you mean. Some songs become huge hits around two years after the album's released, like "Rockstar" by Nickelback...that still kept the album over 100 weeks in the Billboard 200.

You have to think of it as a marketing ploy. Artists sometimes wouldn't make this decision; their manager would. People who already bought the album bought it; the singles that keep on coming by are just persuasion to the listeners to who haven't bought it yet.

How did Queen members split/share their incomes?

There are several sources of income for any musician. In Queen all the members wrote songs separately. Writers get a higher amount of money, or royalties, than the people who sing or play the songs.Within Queen Mercury and May wrote the bulk of the songs, with Taylor and Deacon getting one or two tracks per album. Taylor did rather well from his track I’m in Love With my Car, as it was the b side to Bohemian Rhapsody, earning him the same money as Mercury from the single. However, money was an issue. Under their original manager Norman Sheffield they made very little out of their first 3 albums. The band sacked him and used John Reid and then Jon Beech as managers, but were collectively joint managing directors of the band as a business, something I believe Deacon suggested. This gave them all an income of £100,000 per year each. In the late 70s this was huge, and was topped up by royalties. After A Kind Of Magic the band were working closer on each other’s compositions but were also aware that Mercury was ill and wanted to ease any issues, and stop arguments, so made a decision that all songs would be credited equally whoever had actually written it. This was done for The Miracle, Innuendo and all but one track on the post Freddie album Made in Heaven.

How do music albums make money in India? Do music channels buy them?

Every public displays where you see them being played have to buy music videos before you can even think of playing them. For public broadcast these are brought at commercial rates which is much higher than what we pay at the nearest CD, DVD parlour (wonder how many of us really bought anything from such store).   At initial stage, for music videos associated with any movie, I believe the movie production house do send teaser video clippings of the song for free or even pay the broadcaster to play those at their channel so as to use it as a medium to promote their movie. The channels like 'etc' get them for free, but channels like 'Sony Mix' have to buy them as they mostly shows full video of the songs. From non commercial ground, music CDs rarely make any money in India (which resulted in shutdown of Music World, a heritage music store in Kolkata which is being replaced by a more profitable store which sells breads). This is mainly due to the Indian mentality which rarely cares for intellectual property. Another reason which can be stated is the improper cyber crime act which fails to protect the intellectual properties. Thanks for  the A2A
