Tips For Getting A Scottish Terrier

Scottish Terrier Makes Small Hops Sometimes?

I would have your vet check him out. Some Scotties suffer from a condition called 'Scotty cramp', which can cause bunny hopping like you are describing in mild cases. It usually occurs just after (or during) excitement and exercise. There are supplements and drugs that can help control it, and it will get worse as he ages. If he does have the disorder, he should never be bred- it is genetic, and you should let the breeder know as well- both parents should be removed from the gene pool, since it is recessive and will have been carried by both parents. The disorder is specific to only Scottish terriers- my friend has one with the condition- the earliest sign for hers was bunny hopping in the rear.

Do Scottish Terriers get along well with cats?

Scotties are vermin killers. If the Scottie you get has a high prey drive, he may consider the cat prey which means he will kill her.

And no, raising a puppy with a cat doesn't guarantee anything. I've heard tons of stories about people who do this and then one day a year or two later, they hear a scream and come into the other room to find eviscerated kitty.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but you'd have to use an EXCELLENT breeder who will take the time to ensure that you have a properly tempered dog for your household, and for the cat. http://clubs.akc.org/stca/ can help you get in touch with such a breeder.

The other route would be to rescue an ADULT dog that has a known history, preferably with cats. http://clubs.akc.org/stca/rescue.htm

Scottish Terrier Questions on house breaking?

I am still having problems house breaking our female Scottish Terrier and it seems to be a mirror image of her partner; and he is older. I had problems with him when i first got him, too; but, she seems to be worse.

Does anyone have any suggestions and stories about their Scottish Terriers on house breaking?

Are they really that hard to break the habits? My female Scottie is not quite a year old and my male he is 4; but, still on a occasion has an accident.

I am coming to the conclusion that I have a stubborn female Scottie and I desperately need help; because my husband is ready to get rid of her and I don't want that.

HELP, PLEASE....

Thinking about getting a Scottish Terrier (Scottie). Anyone know this answer?

My family is considering a Scottie and we have just gone and visited a litter. We met the mom and dad and there were just 2 males left (11 weeks old). They are adorable but I am concerned with the severe bow legs and turned in back feet. Is this normal? What else should I be on the lookout for?

Scottish Terrier Puppy Concerns?

Weaning at six to eight weeks is ideal with a few weeks added to adjust to "independent living".
Since the puppy has no teeth but is walking (from the picture) I'd suggest getting some royal canin puppy food and mix in some "just born" puppy formula or "Esbillac" to make a mush. I got a puppy from someone discarding it at about three weeks old and raised her this way. She was wobbly but walking, also no teeth but they were about to break thru. Then her puppy teeth were needle like and weird looking but when the adult ones came in they were fine.
With the puppy I raised, I would make that mush and she would first lick it off my finger then started to lap it from a small bowl that was easy for her to eat from. Keep plenty of fresh water available too.
Congrats on your new pup. I know that sometimes a breed can have colors that are not regular for the breed. You got this one free like I got my little pup and you saved it! Good for you!
You will be very bonded to this little tyke. The one I raised at about the same age is a Pit Bull or pitty mix. The mother was a purebred stray but the father was unknown.
I don't care what a dog is mixed with or if it is purebred. I was looking online and saw a photo of a scottie with some black and tan coloring. Maybe they are not "supposed" to be that color. Maybe there is something else in the pup. Who cares? You saved a life and when he gets a bit older you will be able to tell more about him. He's a real cutie.

I got a new scottish terrier puppy, and she is sleeping alot ?

Yes- She will sleep a lot when she is so young. I have a 1 1/2 year old male scottie. They are not lap dogs and don't want to be held. They like to sit next to you and snuggle with you. If you sit on the floor, they will always bring their toys close and make sure you are right next to them. Watch out- I am sure she'll start playing more and more and then you'll be sorry you even asked about her sleeping so much! :) Be prepared to play ball a lot and go on a lot of walks! My scottie is perfection and I am sure you'll feel the same about your precious little girl!

Are Scottish terriers ears clipped when they are puppies?

The other posters are correct. Scottie ears are never clipped. You didn't say how old your new Scottie is. Pups frequently have one ear up and one flopping down. It'll correct itself as they get older. I've raised Scotties, and shown Scotties, and I don't think I've ever seen a mature Scottie with floppy ears. If yours is young, it's normal. After all, they not born as 100 point dogs, so to speak. Worst case scenario is that the one ear stays kind of flopped over. Big deal! You still have a Scottie, and they are all Terrier with a capital "T" Find a safe place where she can tear around when she's a bit older and you'll see the true Scottie spirit shine thru.
Give her a hug for me. Scotties are all angels.

Scottish Terrier Puppy breathes heavily?

Scotties don't usually have a lot of major problems, they are a very healthy and strong breed. Panting could be because shes overly warm. Are you in a warm climate or is your house overly warm? Consider a haircut. As for breathing heavy, definately see your vet to get her lungs or sinuses checked. When walking her, she could be pulling on the leash too hard and causing damage to her windpipe. Try using a body harness for your dog instead.

How can a PF debater get better?

I can tell you this now because now I am a rising senior in high school. When I first did Public Forum, I realized that its not a solo type event such as LD but rather a team event. Firstly, you need to have a partner who is not only willing to work hard but has qualities that can compliment you. You need to be a dynamic duo. Debate is a sport but in basketball some dynamic duos include Shaq and Kobe, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Kareem and Magic, etc. You and your partner need to have a winning mentality to work hard and compete in every single tournament. Look back at all of your failures and use them to motivate you.Now let me answer your question. You can get better at Public Forum by wanting to get better. Sounds funny, but to gain an edge in debate you need to practice and when things look bad, you work on your flaws. Your case needs to be strong in order to win. If you don't understand everything that is in your case, then there is no need debating out there. It all starts with your case. Thats why you need to do more research for Aff and Neg and have contentions that are not only strong but are easier to convince the judges and audience. Once you have a strong case (MADE ENTIRELY BY YOU) you need to work on delivering your case. Spreading is typical in debate, but you need to work on enunciating every word in your case and figure out tactics to engage the people watching you debate. In short, practice debating—-> figure out your flaws ——-> work on your weaknesses——-> keep debating. What is needed to accomplish this is a winning mentality, a great partner, and a stellar case created entirely by yourself.Good luck debating!
