Why is 405 traffic in Los Angeles so terrible?

There are two principal dynamics contributing to the 24/7 nightmarish traffic you see on the 405:First, the Westside of Los Angeles is a primary daily destination for a large number of Angelenos.  If you are a professional in Los Angeles, chances are you will be working in either Century City, Westwood, Santa Monica, or Culver City.  On top of that, most of the best shopping centers, restaurants, and natural attractions (beaches, hiking trails, parks, etc.) are located on the Westside.  That means there are a lot of people that need / want to be on the Westside at any given time -- not just during rush hour. However, it isn't practical for most people to live on the Westside.  Most of the rental housing stock on the Westside is a scattered collection of very old, low-density units and costs and opposition from existing residents and local bureaucracies make it difficult to build new, higher density housing.  This means that it is almost impossible to find an affordable, somewhat nice rental unit on the Westside.  Trying to buy a single family home is even more difficult.  To get an entry level home on the Westside, you probably need to pay around $2mm, which is obviously out of reach for most people.Taken together, these two dynamics mean that you have a massive migration to the Westside each day, at all hours of the day.  To effect this kind of massive migration smoothly, you need an equally massive infrastructure to move the people.  But in LA you don't have this (and you probably never will).  You have one freeway, the 405, to move millions of people in and out of the Westside.  And of course, the 405 has been at a diminished capacity the past couple years due to construction, which has further exacerbated the problem, particularly in the hill / valley area.

Q : If I wanted to open my own tropical fish store how much start up capital would I need ?

There is no good way to answer your question, there are too many variables that we don't know.

From experience, in my area (which is pretty expensive), it took over $100k to start up. We did it on the cheap. I built my store out my self, I did most of the general contracting stuff and a lot of the labor myself. I had licensed contractors only when I absolutely needed them, usually for work that needed permits and inspections. If I had someone else design and build out, it would have cost twice as much.

As for net income, depends on how well you do. The biggest thing to consider is location. For an independant aquarium store to work, you have to be in an area where the residents have some disposible income since tropical fish aren't a necessity in life. It also helps to be in an area that sees plenty of traffic since walk in traffic will be the single best source you'll have for attracting new customers. Finally, make sure the rent is doable. Retail space ain't cheap and you are going to most likely be in a 5 year lease for your store. High rent is the biggest enemy to cash flow. So to recap, you have to put your store in a high income area, that is very visible and has plenty of traffic, but also has cheap rent. It sounds impossible, but that is the single most important thing to research above all others. If you do good with finding the right location, your odds of success are much higher.

As far as a realistic net income expectation, there is none. If you get a good location, bust your hump, and keep expenses under control, you might clear $200-300 thousand a year. You might also lose money every second the place is open and twice as much every second it's closed. It's a gamble. But, if you really want to do it and you understand that it will be one of the hardest, most stressful jobs you can imagine, go for it all out!!! Don't let anybody tell you you're crazy, because everyone will have their horror stories about owning a business and they'll all tell you a thousand reasons not to go into business for yourself. But, there is nothing in the world like the feeling of knowing you don't work for anybody but yourself. It is a real high.

How controllable are liter bikes if you dont have the intention of going too fast?

Hey I am thinking of getting a liter bike. Specifically a 2004-2007 Kawasaki zx10r.

I have been looking all over the internet for the answer to the question "are liter bikes controllable if you do not want to go too fast", and all I can find are forum posts where someone asks for reviews of some bike and is immediately yelled at by everyone for thinking of it.

Well, everyone also seems to say that no one should ever start on a 600 (which I would have to agree with, for most people). My first bike was a 2005 kawasaki 600, and I had no experience with bikes, and had never even driven a manual car before (although I do know exactly how clutches and engines work, which helped). I have had my 600 for a couple years, and have been fine. Everyone has had some close calls, but none were my fault, or related to the size of bike I was on.

I bought a sportbike not because I wanted to go Mach 5, but because I wanted to enjoy motorcycling , and just happened to like sportbikes the best. Honestly, I ride my 600 like it is a cruiser.

I am starting to get interested in getting a liter bike for a couple reasons: the used ones are not too much more money than used 600's, and how they deliver power. I have no intention of going mach 10 on a zx10, and the fastest i ever went on my 600 was 110. Once. To try it out. On a mountain road. With no one around. The impule to speed just simply does not really occur to me.

I am interested in a 1000 becasue I read they deliver torque a lot better in the lower rpm ranges than 600's. I ride 99% of the time below 6500rpms, and I would like to be able to be on the freeway and have passing power without shifting. Plus the slightly higher weight seems to make freeway riding more stable.

So my question is: If someone were to want a liter bike, but didnt have the intention of speeding, would the bike be able to be controlled to where it did not go past the speed limit almost on its own? Could someone ride one "smoothly" in normal traffic if they used a gentle touch?

Thanks for reading the long question!

P.S. On craigslist I see a 2007 zx10r with 10,500 miles for 5 grand. It has not been dropped. Since this is winter, how much would you guess this price would be with the same bike at around June?

Thanks again!

How was it that United Way offered Sandy Hook families their condolences 3 days before the shooting occured?

I was quite blind until I started searching things myself. There is too much questionable info for it all to be just photoshop. 1) What happened to the other shooters that they had on video the first day? 2) How many guns were actually found on site? and where were they found, in the trunk of his car? 3)They can't even decide if the shooters mother was involved with the school! 4)There's a news video of a father "preparing" to be sad for the interview even though he is laughing off camera. 5) Why did not one of the funerals have an open casket? All of these questions (and more) have come from a couple days of watching different news reels from different dates and different stations. If the media cannot, after nearly a month, have factual information about a horrible event, I fear what kind of accuracy they have about all issues.

What are the chances of being pulled over when going 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 mph over the speed limit?

The Watch Commanders (shift supervisors) would have been extremely displeased with any officer who wrote such petty low quality citations. Quality is the most important word; they wanted to see quality citations and arrests, not any specific quantity. You could write an occasional ticket like that if there was a specific reason for it, but it would not have been tolerated as a habit. You’re also getting into the area at which speedometers are not that accurate. Even the police cars, which supposedly came from the factory with certified speedometers were often off by 5 to 10 % . They were tested every 6 months and would have a sticker on the side of the speedometer showing the true vs. indicated speeds. Granted they have improved substantially from the late 1970’s.Pettiness is the worst form of police abuse, it breeds justified disrespect and contempt both for the law and for law enforcement.

Is a dodge charger a good first car for a teenager?

my daughter wants a 2016 dodge charger stx for her first car. her older sister got whatever car she wanted so the same goes for my youngest. she is really into cars and likes strong, fast ones. she is responsible and has taken drivers ed and has alot of driving hours. she will be 15 in a few months so this car would only be used for going to school, school events, going to the store, and anywhere close to where we are that she needs to get. is this a good choice?
