Why do flights from Europe to USA travel way north up UK then ark across the Atlantic and back down?

As previously mentioned, the Great Circle route is the main reason why flights to/from Europe makes an arc. It is the shortest possible route.Additionally, there are other factors that make airliners travel in such “odd” routes, especially when traveling over the oceans.ETOPS or Extended Range Operation with Two-Engine Airplanes. All airliners, including 3 and 4 engine aircraft (even though the name says otherwise), are given a time rating based on an aircraft’s ability to safely fly with a reduced number of engines to an alternate airport. A sadistic way to think about this is Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim. Every aircraft model and configuration gets an ETOPS rating by the FAA and ICAO basically giving the aircraft authorization to fly a certain number of minutes away from an airport that it can safely land at. These ratings range from ETOPS-75 up to ETOPS-370, the number indicates the number of minutes an aircraft can go away from the closest airport. The Airbus A350XWB currently has the highest rating at ETOPS-370, which basically covers most of the Earth, except over Antarctica; while the new Boeing 787, newer 747 and 777 configurations have an ETOPS-330 rating. Even though an aircraft has been rated for such extended operations, airlines need to have specially trained crews to operate and maintain the aircraft, as well as a contingency plan in effect to accommodate the stranded aircraft. See this video for some clarification:The jet stream saves time and fuel. There is also the issue of little to no radio or radar coverage over certain stretches of the ocean leaving aircraft, so there are ‘highways in the sky’ that routes aircraft in a way that there is minimal blackout time (although aircraft can communicate with each other). See this video for an explanation:

Will dogs travelling between the UK and Europe after Brexit have to go into quarantine?

No. Quarantine was always a peculiar UK thing because it was Rabies free, one of a very small number of countries to obtain that status. It was always slightly ridiculous. In the 1990s we brought a rabbit back from the Netherlands which had to spend six months in quarantine (at great expense), despite the fact that there has never been a case of rabies in a rabbit. The EU never forced anyone to change this, since the whole idea of quarantine makes little sense when you share land borders with other countries. Pet Passports were a UK invention, which they pushed to have recognised as EU regulation on a voluntary basis. The question was never if EU countries would require quarantine, but if the UK will continue to recognise EU pet passports it has no oversight of, for pets returning to the UK.The problem at the moment is that the UK does not have a Pet Passport scheme, it’s only an EU one, so the exceptions for other rabies free counties like Australia and Jamaica rely on it.

What was it like to travel between the UK and the EEC before 1973?

In July 1966 a waiver was obtained from the United Kingdom's obligations under Article VIII of the I.M.F. Agreement, and a basic travel allowance was introduced for travel in countries outside the sterling area. This lasted until 1979.Travellers were only allowed to exchange £50 per year for foreign travel. The bank or exchange office would enter the amount exchanged in the traveller’s passport and once the £50 limit was used up - no more foreign travel that year. Most countries which are now in the EU still requires visa back then. They could be applied for in advance and purchased on arrival in some cases. Luggage was usually searched for contraband on arrival by armed customs officers and all travellers had to queue up at passport control to get their passports stamped. Once full of stamps, a new passport had to be bought, whether or not the old one had expired. The actual travel formalities were much more stringent but the treatment passengers received from the airlines was far superior. Once all the formalities where over, then polite and attentive air stewardesses (as they were then called) really looked after you, bringing you as much free booze as you wanted and even lighting your cigarettes for you inside the cabin (Cigars and pipes unfortunately no longer allowed by 1973).If you travelled by ferry, the process of loading and unloading was more complicated as cars had to all be searched. The journey would take about 25% longer. And of course there was no Channel Tunnel back in 1973.Amazing to think so many people wanted to turn back the clock last June. They must have had very short memories.

As a European citizen, do I need a passport to travel to the UK after Brexit?

Nobody knows. The terms of Brexit have not yet been agreed upon. One of the suggestions is that until 31st December 2020 everything will carry on exactly as it is now (although the UK will then be free and have time to negotiate with countries outside the EU as to what the system will be in 2021).If however there is a “no deal” Brexit then anything could happen. The UK doesn’t have a National ID card so there’s no reason for it to accept a foreign ID card for entry to the UK (UK citizens have to use a passport when travelling abroad so why should EU citizens be any different?). Unless the EU offer the UK something in return for allowing EU citizens to travel without a passport (e.g. access to Galileo) expect to need one. It’s possible that a passport will be insufficient and a visa will be required too. I think this is unlikely - but if the EU demand them from UK citizens then the UK will demand from EU citizens and vice versa.

Can I travel through European countries with UK visa or will I need to apply for visas separately for each countries?

Well, not quite separately for each countries..You will need two kinds of different visa in this case; The UK Visa, and the Schengen Visa (since The United Kingdom isn’t part of the Schengen countries/area). In your case, this Schengen visa could brought you to countries such as; France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Czech, and Poland (as well as the other Schengen members). While The UK visa could only brought you to The UK, for sure.Schengen Area - WikipediaHope I helped! >_<
