How can people with Asperger's make friends?
A British writer who writes about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Alis Rowe, wrote "I gain a lot of comfort from people who do not expect more time/interaction/activity from me than I can give, i.e. they are able to understand and appreciate that there will be 'boundaries' in our relationship and are flexible to be OK with that.'" Those of us who have ASD and have such a flexible friend(s) are blessed indeed!I do have a couple of friends. When learning I had Asperger’s, I immediately let them know. Just as it resolved for me a lot of the mystery about me, I think it helped them to understand me better. When one of my friends invited me to a reunion I had no desire to go to, I turned her down. She wanted to know why and instead of coming up with some excuse, I just gave her a one word answer: Asperger’s. I found it refreshing to just tell the truth instead of come up with some excuse. I did not lose my friend either. She was empathetic as I would have been if the roles had been reversed.I don’t lose sleep over having few friends just as I don’t lose sleep over getting few social invitations. I would lose sleep over coming up with a believable excuse of getting out of an invitation though.I know two sisters who are in competition when it comes to number of FACEBOOK (FB) friends. They are trying to outdo each other. They are long retired and have the time to solicit friends on FB. When their birthdays come up, they will respond to every single birthday greeting. The last time I checked, one sister had 302 and the other had 311. It takes up a good bit of their birthday time to reach their goal of responding to each "Happy Birthday" greeting they receive, but they enjoy it. I also make a point of responding to all my birthday wishes but it's not as an enormous task as it is for the sisters. Sometimes a social interaction deficit has its benefits.
