How much Curcumin or Turmeric should I take?

You have the right kind, Turmeric extracts are usually 95% and they are the strongest. How much you should take depends on your condition. Most Turmeric/Curcumin products recommend 2 or 3 day. I have taken as many as 12 daily for intestinal inflammation. I have a customer who took so much turmeric for an inflammed eye her hands turned yellow (temporarily, don't get alarmed). I don't know what brand you have, I would start off taking the amount recommended on the bottle, you can always increase the dosage if needed for acute situations.

What is the difference between cumin and turmeric?

Over the past several years, Westerners have begun to sit up and take notice of herbs, spices and seasonings that have been used in other parts of the world for thousands of years. Two spices of particular interest are turmeric and cumin. While both of these spices are commonly used in a variety of curry dishes, their flavors are more different than they are similar. Cumin has a much stronger flavor. It is sweet yet also pungent and sharp. Turmeric is much milder and able to complement the flavor of a wider variety of foods. Where cumin can easily overpower a dish, turmeric blends more effortlessly. Both spices are warm and earthy, but turmeric is more bitter than sweet. When it comes to appearance, they are very different and easily discernible from one another. Turmeric is a bright yellow, whereas cumin is an orangish brown. In their fresh, unground form, turmeric and cumin differ even more dramatically: Turmeric is a root that looks similar to whole ginger. Fresh cumin is purchased in the form of seeds. In some recipes, cumin can potentially act as a viable substitute for turmeric. However, it is not recommended. Should the situation be reversed, turmeric is not a spice that can stand in for cumin. Is cumin as healthy as turmeric? With the rising interest in natural treatments and health aids, there has been much confusion surrounding these two spices. The reason is actually a simple one; the primary chemical component of turmeric that makes it so healthy is called curcumin. You can easily remember the difference once you are aware that curcumin is found within turmeric and is not the same thing as cumin. Curcumin does make turmeric an incredibly powerful medicinal spice with a plethora of health benefits. However, cumin is the clear winner when comparing the benefits of these two spices. Cumin is practically bursting with vitamins, minerals and nutrients in addition to containing antioxidants and other properties similar to those of turmeric.

How does turmeric/curcumin interact with coffee/caffeine?

Here's a somewhat technical answer. Curcumin can be deactivated by an enzymatic process in the liver called glucuronidation. Caffeine increases the activity of the enzymes that facilitate glucuronidation. If you drink coffee or any other caffeinated beverage within 2 or 3 hours of taking curcumin, you get less (potentially much less benefit). There is an exception to the rule. One of the curcumin supplements, Longvida, is formulated so that it bypasses the glucuronidation process in the liver. That's the benefit of using this particular product over some others.

Does turmeric powder expire?

Turmeric powder does not expire, but typically it will have a ‘best by’ date. This date is probably going to be 1–2 years from the package date of the product. The best way to tell if your Turmeric has passed it’s ‘best by’ date is to look at the product and determine if the color has changed, if it has lost its scent or if the taste is off. All spices have oils in them and as the oils dissipate the flavor and scent will become less and less. The length of time that Turmeric will last also depends on how it is stored.
