Does multiculturalism and diversity destroy nations?
Multiculturalism is just a word. Every culture is made up of various subcultures and those in turn are further made up of a variety of sub-sub cultures. Yet they co-exist, peacefully. Because they look for common threads instead of divisive ones. Since culture is not a rigid definition of traditions, it is possible for them to blend while retaining their individuality. Why then can it not work on a bigger scale ? It does work for many countries. Why not the US ? Diversity is a GOOD thing. It provides choices and options and variety. It provides an alternate way of looking at things. That is never harmful. Differences are inherent in a man's search for a unique identity. At what level do they stop ? nation ? State ? Religion ? color ? race ? ethnicity ? sect ? sub sect ? clan ? family ? What is the solution ? Even if EVERYTHING were made uniform and homogenized, you know people would find a reason to differentiate themselves from others. Problems arise only when the dominant culture of a nation insists on assimilation into theirs by abandoning other cultures. In present day world, the insistence by some that everyone let go of their heritage and own culture to adopt the prevalent culture (?) is the cause of many a grievances. This intolerance must be replaced by open mindedness. Through the history, people have migrated and fused / modified their cultures to evolve new ones. Everywhere in history, the present day "cultures" came into being when some people migrated and brought their way of life to others. No one has sprung from the soil that they stand on today. "Mine and Yours" can be healthy and "Mine Vs Yours" can be self destructive.
