Upper Control Arm Replacement

How long would it take to replace upper control arms/ball joints on 2000 F150 supercab 2 whl drive?

On your vehicle, the upper ball joint is part of the upper control arm and is replaced as a unit. The lower ball joint is serviced separately from the control arm. Mitchell book time allows 2.0 hours to replace both upper control arms and 3.2 hours to R & I the lower control arms and replace the ball joints. Depending on the labor rates in your area that will give you an idea about cost. If you pay someone to do the job for you argue a little bit about the labor, book time is a real porkin for the customer, most of my techs can beat the book time by 2 hours.

In my 1962 Chevy Impala I am planning on replacement the control arm bushings. Looking for advice as to how to do. I am also replacing all the ball joints, tie rod assembly, idler arm and upper and lower control arm bushings and then off to the alignment shop..

Does Walmart do lower control arm replacement?

No.They only do basic maintenance such as oil changes, batteries, tires and some other miscellaneous tasks. If you can call it a repair they most likely do not do it except in the case of tires. In fact even in an oil change they do not check all fluids.any people think they check coolant, but they do not. In fact, they are specifically told not to.I worked at a location for 5 years while attending college after being a full service tech for years. They worked with my schedule. From my experience there they want to keep everything as dumbed down as possible.I suppose it's a lower risk factor, but it is also likely easier to maintain an adequate staff if the skill needed is kept low.

How much should a control arm replacement cost?

A dealer would charge you even more.

I was quoted 900 by a dealer (for a PT Cruiser). I took it to another place that just does shocks and brakes, etc. They told me that the Chrysler dealer was full of shyt and i just needed a couple new bushings. He even let me look under my car and showed me how much of a f-ing liar the Chrysler dealer was. I got my car fixed for 220 bucks and that included a ball joint too.

Yes. Anytime you replace a major steering/suspension component, you MUST align the vehicle.

What will happen if I don't replace my Upper Control Arms?

To answer your question, first your tires will begin to wear unevenly. Then you would likely have a problem with the car pulling to one side.

I'm a little bit surprised to hear that a Honda Dealer gave you such an estimate. In over 40 years of working on cars I have never seen a car that had the Upper control arms wear out before the Lowers. That and they have no fluid in them, so they can't leak. The McPherson struts do, and could leak, but not the control arm bushings.
For the work you describe, those prices are astronomical!
I could tell you Dozens of Horror stories about the "stuff" Dealers have told me or folks that I know. Never, I repeat Never listen to what they have to say. Dealers lie worse than any other profession I can think of. (I can back that statement up if anyone cares to question me.)
You need to get at least one more estimate. Don't say a word about the dealer or anyone else's estimate. Just tell them you think something is wrong with the suspension. No details. Let them figure it out. IF you get another estimate similar to the others, Then you will need to decide whom to let do the repair. Personally I think you might need an alignment and balance before taking a road trip, but that's about all.

What goes into the cost of replacing a car control arm?

The cost of the control arm plus a reasonable mark up and the labour to install it.If the shop buys the control arm for 100 the reasonable retail price is around 150. Plus an hour labour( depending on make and model) that is another 80 t0 100. If you buy the control arm yourself and ask the shop to install it for you then the reasonable thing for the shop to do is increase the labour by the lost profit margin of the control arm.The alignment, if necessary is extra.
