What types of window coverings are best for homes with cats?

We’ve had good luck with heavy, closely woven, satinesque drapes that don’t offer much purchase for curious kitties’ claws. But if the surface is coarser, we get more problems. The same is true generally for upholstery, one of the most (if not, of course, absolutely) cat-proof things we ever had was a sort of suedelike stuff. There’re some fur-sticking-to-them issues but vacuuming is reasonably effective. We didn’t have such good luck with the lace curtains that hang behind the drapes (the drapes are usually kept tied back because I despise the house being dark), and some of those have some rips and tears here and there. All in all, they don’t look too bad after 14 years of anything from 4 to 7 cats but they do need replaced. Maybe the summer cleaning will involve that this year.Miniblinds are not good. They aren’t sturdy enough, and the cords are another appealing enticement. Regular Venetian blinds, especially the traditional aluminum ones, have rather the same problem with the added drawback of the creases made by climbing felines being permanent. I could see McKayla’s suggestion of wooden Venetians working. Vertical blinds might work as well.Sheers are cheap to replace and the bigger cats leave them alone, but kittens can and will climb almost anything. My wife got injured when Victoria was a kitten because she had tried to climb the curtain, lost her balance, and fell into her face with claws extended. My Dad made a “cat shelf” for one of the windows at their house. We just pulled the curtains away from it, and it’s a brilliant invention. Quora won’t allow me to upload the picture, though; I’ve gotten “There was an error uploading this file” three times in a row. So you’ll have to take my word for it. The shelf allows them to get up without having to climb the curtains.
