Vet Recommends Rabies Booster

How often do dogs need rabies shots?

Once at the age of 3 months , folllowed by a booster one month later and then annually . this is the schedule followed in India mostly . depends on the brand of the vaccine shot your vet uses .

Why is my dog tired and shivering after her rabies shot?

My 4 yr old, 10lb Terripoo was active before her rabies/DHPPC/Bord shots (3 total). The vet told me it was ok to administer all 3 at the same time. 24 hours later, she seems tired and restless. When I pick her up, she yelps in pain. I tried to see if she's sick or just tired from the shots so I took her for a walk. During the short walk, she is just normal and still pulls and barks at other dogs like nothing's wrong. Is she just trying to get sympathy from me or do I need to take her back the vet?

How often do dogs get rabies vaccines/booster shots?

Rabies vaccinations should not be given more often then every 3 years..unfortunately some states still require yearly vaccinations.

Distemper/parvo/canine hepatitis/adenovirus-2 vaccinations only need to be given every 3 years as well.

Lepto, parainfluenza, lyme and kennel cough (bordatella) should only be given to those dogs who are at high risk of exposure.

Coronavirus,adenovirus-1 and giardia vaccinations should NOT be given to ANY dog.

There really is no longer ANY debate in the vet community regarding vaccination...there is a protocol set forth by the AAHA/AVMA and all 27 vet schools as well as many long term studies done by a major drug company, Dr.Jean Dodds, Dr. Ron Schultz and several major universities. All US vets are well aware of the studies and the protocol, unfortunately there are still vets who refuse to pay attention and continue to over vaccinate despite knowing that this can cause serious problems in pets and is totally unnecassary.

How often must my dog get rabies vaccine after the first one? My dog just had his rabies vaccine but the doctor told me to bring him back by another 3 months for another shot for rabies.

It depends on the rabies outbreaks in the wildlife in your area. California is pretty suburban and puppy rabies vaccine at 4–6 months then a year later then in California it's every 4 years. Alabama it's every year period. At least it was, I am not up to date. Down south they have the dog day afternoons. July 23- August 25 or so. I think the depression created packs of feral dogs. Anyway back in the 1930s you did not want to run into a pack of feral dogs, which was common back then. Viruses can live in the ground for years and come out in the right conditions. End of July to end of August is rabies time( kinda like the spring for parvo). Rabies attacks the nervous system and can be transmitted from species to species, not to mention that untreated rabies is the most dangerous virus there is. Eat that Ebola!!! Government took over and created animal control and required rabies vaccination done and recorded by a licensed veterinarian. Australia does not have the rabies virus, so you can not ship a dog from the US mainland to Australia. You can do a 6 month quarantine to Hawaii and 3 month quarantine to Australia. 9 months quarantine to prevent the chance of Australia of getting the rabies virus. Just ask Johnny Depp when he tried to take his Yorkies on his private plane to Australia and they took his dogs.

Do dogs need booster shots every year?

it depends on the shots she had on the last visit. some vaccines are 1 or 3 years. if your not sure call your vet. if you are worried about over vaccination, you can request a titres test. not all vet have these so check with yours. but what they do is test the blood to see how much of the vaccination is still in the blood. if its high enough to be effective, you wont need it. i have known people that only had to give the dog rabies every 6 years. BUT THAT DEPENDS ON THE DOG. she is simply cautious because she did lose a dog to over vaccination.

What to do with overdue dog rabies vaccination.?

Okay so before I start this I need to mention I live in NC. This is important due to their rabies vaccination laws. Anyways, my dog is long overdue for his rabies shot. The only one he has ever gotten was a couple months after he was born as a puppy. I didn't get him his yearly shots after that one mainly because of financial issues. I want to get him up to date on his shots now but I have a couple of questions. 1. Will there be any penalty or fine for not getting him his rabies shot before? He hasn't ever bitten anyone or anything like that. He just likes to bark at strangers for a couple minutes like a lot of other dogs. 2. How can I pull up his file? I can't seem to find the original papers that proved he was vaccinated at birth. On top of that when I made an account for him, I'm pretty sure they spelled my name and my dog's name wrong. The phone number I also put has since expired and I don't remember it. So again how will they be able to pull up his record/file with all that missing info? Or will we just have to make another and sort of start of at a clean slate. 3. I know this is basically my first question but I really need some clarification. Will there be any type of legal punishment, fine, etc? Or will they just take him in like normal, give him his shot, and then keep him up to date with his yearly shot after that? Someone please help me answer these questions as I really don't know what to expect/do. Thank you in advance!

When do dogs have to get the rabies vaccine?

Does a depo-medrol cancel a rabies vaccine if given on the same day?

Just the fact that she had a UTI could have made the rabies vaccine less effective because vaccines work by activating the immune system and getting it to recognize the vaccine as something bad, therefore causing the immune system to actually kill the disease when it comes into contact with it. Because she had a UTI, her immune system was already active and focused on something else, so it didn't react to the rabies as much as it should have.

But no, at our practice, we give Depo and vaccines on a fairly regular basis when the animal is having skin problems that don't require antibiotics.

I would definitely talk to a different vet and see what they recommend.

My dog is allergic to the rabies vaccine?

We've had our dog for approx one year, she's 18 mos old. She got her first rabies shot when at the breeder and i was told that she was allergic to the vaccine, her eyes swelled shut and she was given an injection of benedryl. Today i took her to my vet for her 2nd rabies shot (one year after the first one) and my vet (a sweet young girl still wet behind the years...) didn't want to give her a shot not even with a shot of benedryl prior. the vet is afraid that Molly (our dog) might have become too sensitive to the vaccine and didn't want to take the chance. I live on he east cosat where rabies is prevalent... i very much want to give my dog the shot for her safety and my sanity. i talked with a vet in oregon who said that the normal protocol is to give the dog a shot of benedryl 40 minutes prior to the rabies shot. should more medicine be needed then intravenous steroids are used. i should mention that Molly's mom went thru the same thing with her first rabies shot but hasn't had a problem since. anyone have any thoughts about what to do? our vet has already contacted the department of agriculture to get Molly exempted from state rabies requirements but i don't think i want to go that route. any advice is welcome.
