In 1976, it was renamed the PATRIOT Air Defense Missile System. The MIM-104 Patriot would combine several new technologies, including the phased array radar and track-via-missile guidance. Full-scale development of the system began in 1976 and it was deployed in 1984. Patriot was used initially as an anti-aircraft system, but in 1988 it was upgraded to provide limited capability against tactical ballistic missiles as PAC-1 (Patriot Advanced Capability-1). The most recent upgrade, called PAC-3, is a nearly total system redesign, intended from the outset to engage and destroy tactical ballistic missiles.

What would happen if a sniper shot the president of the United States from a distance of 1.5 km?
Firstly, it's possible. Accurate shots from 2.5KM have been taken.Secondly, the sniper wouldn't betray his position from that distance with one shot. The Secret Service just wouldn't know where it came from. It would take hours to determine the sniper's position. Additionally, there are counter-measures the sniper can take.Thirdly, the sniper simply wouldn't get the chance of a second shot. The Secret Service would both pile on POTUS and move him at the same time.Fourthly, the first shot would need to either be a head-shot or hit his heart. This is possible but unlikely from that distance. Anything else is survivable with the world's best immediate medical care.It would take one of the world's best snipers and he would need to be lucky but he could achieve his objective and escape. He'd need to immediately/seriously dispose of the rifle and quietly slip out of the country without officially crossing a border.His main issue would be that unless he has been trained in secret over several years, the Secret Service will likely already be aware of both the world's best snipers and ownership/location of the world's sniper rifles. I don't know but I imagine there are a few hundred snipers and a few thousand rifles. They will immediately and systematically investigate each one even if it takes decades. If the sniper doesn't have a stand-up alibi for that day, he will be apprehended.The next issue would be CCTV. The sniper would need to scope-out his shoot location perhaps several times. He would likely be facially recognised afterwards. If he used intermediaries then that just widens the attack vector as the more people you add to a plot, the more chance one will make a mistake.With POTUS gone/brain-dead/comatose, the VP would be sworn in almost immediately.I give the sniper a 20% chance of success but an 80% chance of eventually being apprehended.So, for the tiniest fraction of a percent of the world's population that could both do it and have the ideological, military and/or financial motivation — they would need to accept a 4% chance of both success and getting away with it.Not many are in that subset.Don't try it!
