Seeing that Moses was raised and educated as an Egyptian he would have had the necessary skills to write. As with any writer each work may have its own style but it is likely that while Moses wrote these books he was writing them from what people were telling him. Moses spent 40 years in the wilderness with his Father in Law where he was probably taught about the stories in Genesis. Remember Jethro was the Priest of the Midian’s, (Exodus 3:1) who were the descendants of Abraham from his second wife Keturah, (Genesis 25:1-2) after the death of Sarah (Genesis 23:2). So it is likely that Jethro would have been schooled in the stories as handed down from Abraham. There is no record that these stories were written before Moses and it is generally assumed that they were passed from father to son or priest to priest by word of mouth. Moses may have written them down during that period so the true author of Genesis would have been Jethro. However, it is possible (but not likely) that these writings were passed along since the time of Noah and added to as events unfolded. Although, this is problematic because the languages were confounded at the “Tower of Babel” (Genesis 11:4-9).The Hebrew stories of slavery in Egypt may have been passed along and collected over the years. Since Moses probably did not hear all of them from his mother, (she was his nurse for the Pharaoh's daughter) he would have relied on Aaron and Miriam while they were wandering about in the desert, making them the true authors of at least part of the book of Exodus. During this time Moses must have begun to teach some of them how to read, after all what good would it have done to write all this down if no one could read it. The alternative is that the Hebrews were not completely illiterate but had passed the art of reading and writing to their children while they were in bondage. Weaving the language and stories into their fabrics or painted on their pottery as symbols. It is not unreasonable to believe that they wanted their children to remember the cruelty they suffered. The Last three books Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, Moses personally experienced as he lived and led the Hebrews during his final 40 years in the wilderness. Whether he wrote them himself or he had his aides writing them is not really known. This should help explain why the books all have slightly different writing styles.
