"North & South" is set in the 19th century. It's an excellent movie. Very similar to Pride & Prejudice. You want passion? Give Mr. Thornton a try! "Jane Eyre" is darker, but a lot of people like it. You're right, though...most of those passionate lovers stories end tragically. Someone always seems to die. :(

If so, my husband’s favorites are Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling and the Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey classic Holiday Affair, which is also his favorite Christmas film. I think it is safe to say, the film needs to be funny, have witty dialog, and a male lead.
