What are the best movies about aliens?
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)Live. Die. Repeat. This alien invasion movie had me on the edge of my seat. Loosely based on a Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow is basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day, but on a heavy dose of steroids.Tom Cruise stars as Major William Cage of the United Defence Force, who initially, is introduced to the audience as a cowardly military man who hasn't seen a single day in combat against the relentless alien race of “Mimics”.Despite its explosive over-the-top action, Cage's arc in the film actually had a lot of heart. You see him get increasingly confident and battle-hardened with every death. He comes back fighting stronger everytime, soon becoming a formidable soldier himself.Starring opposite Cruise is the equally impressive Emily Blunt, playing Sergeant Rita Vrataski, aka the Angel of Verdun, aka the Full Metal B*tch. A badass in her own right, Vrataski doesn't fall into the generic “instantaneous love interest” trope, and by no means is she a damsel in distress. Instead, she holds her own on the battlefield, tearing Mimics apart mercilessly with her audaciously large sword, fashioned out of a propeller blade.Cage and Vrataski have incredible chemistry in this movie. The bond that slowly builds in a crescendo as the film progresses, doesn't feel forced in any way. It feels very authentic, giving this film a genuine emotional dimension that most action films of this nature choose to relegate to the sidelines. The film also portrays humans in a more favourable light. We're no longer the helpless inferior race that has to succumb to the behest of extraterrestrial invaders. Instead, soldiers don bulky, mechanised exo-suits, reminiscent of the ones from The Matrix Revolutions. And with the help of Cage's time looping abilities, we actually stand a real fighting chance against the aliens for once. With two talented leads that ground what could've easily been another run-of-the-mill action film, Edge of Tomorrow definitely serves as a well deserved highlight in the vast ocean of alien invasion movies.

What is the best alien movie?
U.S. Military? Independence Day has all the countries coming together to fight the aliens, granted with the title Independence Day it's set in the U.S. I can't think of any others like that. My favourite alien film is Paul, partly because it shows all the cheesy clichés of most other alien movies.
What is your favorite movie about aliens/ufos?
I'm 66 now and retired to Thailand (lucky old me) but before I left the cold, wet misery of Blighty, I VT-ed a transmission of "Invasion", which I have LOVED ever since I first saw it, aged 14 (no major body-count, so a "U" certificate) as I knew it would never air out HERE.In the Orient, the lack of special effects (although the car that crashes into "nothing" is very well done) would bore the locals, weaned on the excesses of Hollywood - and aliens who are simply Chinese would puzzle them totally! But then, they would not realise that in mid-'60s England, Chinese people (other than in London's Gerrard Street) WERE alien to the average citizen - rather like a black tourist I once met here, who hailed from Brixton. She told me, "When I travel in rural areas, the kids look at me like I'm a Martian!" Of course, having Chinese aliens saved the producers the cost of SFX.But do not be put off this EXCELLENT British movie by its minuscule budget. It makes up for it in so many ways. Critics say it is moody. This is helped by the crisp sound, pin-sharp b&w photography and virtual lack of background music. But for me, the thing that MAKES "Invasion" is the BELIEVABILITY of the absurd plot, which is achieved by something many modern sci-fi movies lack. REALISTIC ACTING (even at 14, that blew me away). It is casual, smooth and apparently effortless. We are sucked in because we BELIEVE it. And when you consider the acting talent that was assembled, it is hardly surprising. You BELIEVED the great Edward Judd and under-rated Valerie Gearon were doctors. You had to go out and get an ORANGE DRINK when the temperature started to climb. And "Invasion" was the first solid role I had seen Barrie Ingham in - those EYES just bored through you.It is a mark of the movie how LONG the principal actors' careers have lasted - some to THIS DAY. Living over here, I can tell you that more than fifty years on, (E)Ric Young is STILL going strong in Hong Kong! There is NO movie, big or small, that has the easy pace, yet mounting tension, and sheer persuasion of "Invasion".
