There is no point in picking up a geophysical fluid dynamics textbook with no background in calculus. Some textbooks do cover the fundementals in the appendix. For physical oceanography with connections to atmospheric science, a great place to start would be Marshall and Plumbs book: atmosphere ocean and climate dynamics. For something more theoretical and hardcore, ocean dynamics by olbers, willebrand and Eden is great.
Why does Sheldon Cooper say geology isn't a real science?
Mostly because he's a character on a TV show, but there's a kernel of 'realness' when he says that, because Sheldon is a physicist. Some physicists (and a few other scientist types) like to tease geologists as not really working in a 'real science' because a) geology is relatively 'young' as sciences go and b) a lot of 'geology' takes millions and millions of years to work out, which makes it tough to make an experimental test. But probably mostly c) because geologic 'answers' are often couched in terms of uncertainty, which is because we deal with real systems, rather than 'perfect' experimental ones.That said - geologists do a lot of work in their heads, which a physicist ought to respect, because a lot of important physics is done in someone's head as well - see for example, Einstein, and Hawking.Of the 'hard' sciences (those dealing with real world data rather than human behavior), geology may be the 'least hard' in terms of quantifiable testable experimental stuff - I've heard geology called 'the liberal arts of the sciences' and there's a kernel of truth to that, too - BUT, when Sheldon says 'geology isn't a real science' it is mostly because he doesn't know anything much about geology.
