This will depend on many factors. 1) Are you from NY?2) Does anyone from your office live near you?3) Do you take the same subway at the same time each day?4) How crowded is it?5) What other subways do you take and how crowded are they?6) How much do y0u notice other people on the subway?7) How good are you at recognizing people you know?

What's it like to go to the Cannes Film Festival?

To augment Dan Goodswen's response, there are many festivals within the Cannes Festival. There is the Official Competition, which distributes the palms, or citations for excellence. There is the Director's Fortnight, a slightly edgier competition featuring the work of younger filmmakers. There is the film market, in which somewhere between 700 and 1,000 films are shown to potential distributors who might be interested in picking the film up for their region. (I saw My Left Foot at the market, on a bill of Irish cinema.)And there is the celebrity gauntlet that includes paparazzi snapping photos of celebs climbing the iconic 39 steps of the Grand Palais (39 for the Alfred Hitchcock movie of that name), the biggest celebs commanding suites and cabanas at the nearby Antibes at the Hotel du Cap, a hostelry so luxurious that the Nazis commandeered it for their headquarters during World War II, and celeb wannabes walking topless on the beaches of Cannes.Robert Mitchum and starlet Simone Sylva on the beach at CannesI've been a dozen or so times, and my favorite place is the Majestic Bar, where  I've bumped into Jack Nicholson in his cups, been kissed by Mel Gibson who mistook me for someone else and been treated to a nightcap by Norman Mailer (then head of the Cannes jury). At the Majestic I witnessed what may be my favorite Cannes moment, a producer mistaken for someone else. There are many stories at the naked Festival, this is one of them: The Art Of The Film Deal At Cannes

Power Inverters for 2 day camping trip for hairdryer and curling iron?

Hairstyling appliances are too high wattage to run on battery or portable power units. That inverter you are looking at is NOT a power source. It is just a device for converting the power from the DC batteries of a large vehicle to AC in order to run 120 volt electrical devices. Unless you are going to this festival in a semi truck with a massive battery the inverter would be useless. And if you read the reviews on it, even people who used it with their trucks had trouble with it.

You don't need a hair dryer for an outdoor festival. If the weather is dry (low humidity) you hair will dry naturally outdoors in less than 30 minutes. If the weather is humid, a dryer will not do you any good (same for the curling iron) because your hair will absorb the humidity and go natural as soon as you wash it anyway. You can buy butane cartridge powered curling irons if you think you "have" to have something, but I guarantee any hairstyling you manage will dissappear in hours if not minutes. I see this happen all the time in outdoor weddings and concert festivals: the artificially curled girl's hair goes flat and the blown-dry straight hair gets frizzy. If you plan to be outdoors, you will be a lot less dissappointed if you accept that your hair is going to revert to its natural state no matter what you do.

The other comments are right -- outdoor festivals are NOT fashion shows and you will seem silly trying to primp like you were going to a nightclub. Bring a good hat, some headbands, scarves, barrettes and scrunchies and use them to keep your hair under control or to hide it. Nobody cares what your hair looks like except you and since there are not likely to be any mirrors there, don't fret about it

Jehovah's Witnesses: Can you explain "conscience matter" and give me as many examples as possible, please?

My understanding is that they are situations in which it is up to the individual to make a decision and the watchtower doesn't take a stance on it. If that's so, why is it a "matter" at all? Wouldn't it just be a non-issue?

What is it like to travel sitting next to a celebrity?

I was flying back from South Africa with my college students on the London to Minneapolis leg. I was surprised to be bumped up to first class because they oversold coach. (lucky me!) Since the seat next to me was unoccupied, I asked the stewardess if it was okay if my students could come up, one at a time, and sit next to me for 10 - 15 minutes each while I talked quietly with them about what they learned on the trip. She said it would be no problem. After about an hour an elderly lady in the middle section of first class (who had apparently been drinking a little too much) began making loud comments about allowing the riffraff up in first class. We were speaking quietly so as not to bother anyone, (even people across the isle could not hear us much less someone in the back of the middle section 5 rows back. But this old gal just didn't like the idea of sharing first class with any commoners. She continued to get louder, the more she drank. The stewardess went over to her and explained what we were doing and she began to argue with her. The stewardess finally had to threaten her that she would be arrested if she did not quiet down. At that point I told the student to go back and that we'd finish our conversation the next day. The stewardess apologized and thanked me. I wondered who this cranky old lady was and went over to her to talk and explain what I was doing and apologized if I had offended her. She'd have none of it and began to curse at me too - so I went back to my seat and ignored her the rest of the trip. She looked vaguely familiar but I didn't know who she was. That weekend I went to see the movie, “Harry Potter” and lo and behold, there was my friend from the flight! I saw her on the screen - "Professor Minerva McGonagall" - Maggie Smith! I said to my wife, "That's her!" She said, "Who?" and explained the whole thing to her. We had quite a laugh. So I guess even the rich and famous have off days. Dear old Maggie. I felt a little sorry for her but at least she was flying first class with unlimited beverages.
