What do people in El Salvador do for entertainment?

People in El Salvador do what people in the US do for fun. We love going out dancing, to concerts, meeting with friends, eating out. We love seafood, and spend a lot of time at the beach. (click on the first link below for a slide show of some of the things we do for fun!)

We are now in Lent (Semana Santa), and spend a lot of time in church (the country is 90% catholic, and as such, is very church oriented).

Surfing has now come into our culture, and many of us enjoy riding waves. El Salvador has some of the best surfing beaches in the world.

We are avid sports fans, and are open to many sports, including Polo, swimming, boxing, judo, basketball, baseball, etc. As with most of the countries around the world, Soccer is our national sport.

Gardening is very much enjoyed, and you will often see people who live in apartments that will have a few potted plants that they fiercely take care of.

There are also the local fiestas (celebrations), celebrating local saints, cities, holidays. We even have our own Carnival (El Carnaval de San Miguel).

We are a poor but proud people. We share what we have, and embrace those around us. We are hardworking, and dedicated.

I feel a void in my heart when those who visit El Salvador (even if you lived there a WHOLE year, as the poster above stated!!!) can not get past the gangs (as if we were the ones to have invented the concept of gangs) and poverty. They come to El Salvador and see how different from their lives things are but fail to see the beauty of the people. Instead of respecting the differences, they criticize them. It is a great shame.

I hope things change.

Did Salvador Dali use drugs?

While it might seem impossible that Dali didn't "take drugs" I recall two things he said on the matter: first, "I don't do drugs, I am drugs" and second, "Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic"- but tracking down the original source to verify the translations will require a bit more effort. That being said, at the time, there was something of a moral panic in the media about the dangers of hallucinogenic drugs, such as LSD, magic mushrooms, peyote etc. What the interviewer was really saying was "dude, you work is so far out and weird that the only explanation for it has got to be these demon drugs all the kids are into these days, and as we all know, drugs are bad and people who take these so called mind-drugs are useless bloodclots who will never amount to anything, so can we dismiss your work as drug-addled scribbling, cuz you be making a lot of people uncomfortable."Dali's response is perfect, as he basically says, "I am weirder while cold sober than a drum circle full of hippies on acid".That being said, at the time, in his particular artistic/social/intellectual circles, the use of drugs was commonplace. Alcohol was used multiple times a day, as was tobacco. Stimulants such as Benzedrine were not even regarded as unusual. Hashish use was very common, especially in Spain and southern France, Absinthe was super popular. Cocaine was added to any tonics and freely available. Opiate use was virtually unregulated and used to cure everything from hangovers to mild coughs to boredom. Dali almost certainly used these drugs as often as anyone else in that time and place.

Who invented pupusas?
