What Book/play/movie Is Similar To

Are there any characters (in movies, books, plays) similar to Karna of Mahabharata?

Maniratnam’s Movie ‘Thalapathy’ is based on the Dhuruyodhana - Karna Friendhip by portraying them as Protagonists.

Which hamlet movie is most similar to the book, which version with what actor (who plays hamlet)?

Hamlet (1996) starring Kenneth Branagh. As one of the users of imdb.com quoted as saying...

" must say that, looking at Hamlet from the perspective of a student, Brannagh's version of Hamlet is by far the best. His dedication to stay true to the original text should be applauded. It helps the play come to life on screen, and makes it easier for people holding the text while watching, as we did while studying it, to follow and analyze the text."

It runs 242 minutes, the cut version runs 150 minutes.

Now Mel Gibson's Hamlet (1990) is a very good one indeed also, one imdb.com user says
"Zeferelli, although cut some seemingly vital parts to the play, made it his own, and created a beautiful tribute to Shakespeare. I am sure if the Bard had a camera, he would have filmed and wrote the screenplay somewhat the same.

"Mel Gibson has portrayed Hamlet in the most true-to-human nature as anyone ever has. His brooding and depressing personality is realistic. Gibson doesn't allow the madness to overcome him. He is passionate, powerful and the epitome of the son who has gone through hell over his father's death and incestuous marriage of his mother. His performance brings tears to my eyes."

Which hamlet movie is most similar to the book, which version with what actor (who plays hamlet)?

The Kenneth Branaugh Hamlet is the best if you want a movie based directly on the play, complete with Shakespeare's lines. It is a bit ponderous and Branaugh tends to chew the scenery, but it is a good representation of the play.

The 1980 version, directed by Rodney Bennett, starring Derek Jacobi is also quite complete.

Hope this helps.

What movies made were similar to the novel/play "Our town"?

Something similar...The Human Comedy by Author William Saroyan. The narrator Ray Collins is dead, and provides an overview of his town, and small town values.

In a sense, you could compare It's A Wonderful Life (Capra) to Our Town--George comes unstuck from his life and gets an overview of his life. Unlike Our Town, he has the opportunity of going back and living his life while fully appreciating it; while the heroine of Our Town by contrast only appreciates her life after she has died.

By the way, Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy wrote a play called Einen Jux will er sich machen which Thorton Wilder rewrote as THE MERCHANT OF YONKERS, and rewrote in 1955 as The Matchmaker. The same play was rewritten by Jerry Herman to provide the script for Hello Dolly. I think the only supernatural element is the conversation Dolly has with her dead husband, though he only answers her once, at the end. Hollywood happy ending in this movie--unlike the mercilessly sad Our Town.

Modern books/ movies similar in theme to Macbeth?

Lion King is actually supposed to be based on Hamlet, but I suppose I can see the Macbeth link (though it applies to Claudius's rise to power more specifically).

Look up "Scotland, PA" - It's a movie done a few years back based on Macbeth. Never seen it, but I hear its a bit of a dark comedy, modern-day retelling of the play.

I've heard Scarface has many similarities. (Again, never seen it, so can't attest personally)

"The Last King of Scotland" is inspired by historical events in 1970's Africa and parallels some of the major events of the play. This isn't a retelling of the play, but it is a very dark look at the realities of political power gone awry. It's frightening to see how (at least dramatized) real events can be so much more frightening than pure fiction.

For something really off-the-wall, look at Disney's cartoon series from the 90's called Gargoyles. There are many Shakespearean references throughout the series, including an immortal Macbeth and the 3 weird sisters. They actually intertwine the history of the Gargoyles in with the Macbeth story, but really get so much of it wrong.

I feel like there's a really obvious one that I'm missing. I'll get back to you if I come up with it. In the meantime, think about any storyline where people act ruthlessly to climb to the top (politically, business-wise, socially, etc.) a few hauntings and blood on the hands (literally or figuratively) will secure at least a general link to the play.

Good luck!

A Streetcar Named Desire: Is the movie similar to the book?

I would not have said so. No.

Was "Groundhog Day" the first widely popular movie/book/play… that explored the topic of a repetitive time loop in order to "get something right"?

Don’t know if it was the first, but it’s definitely the first well-known one. After doing a quick Google search it seems there were at least a few that came before it.12:01 PM from 1990 (and another version done in 1993, same year as Groundhog Day). The movie appears to be a low budget Sci-Fi Thriller starring Jonathan Silverman. If you look into this movie further, you will find that the creators believe that Groundhog Day was actually a rip-off of their story. There are a few others I found that precede both Groundhog Day and 12:01 PM, but the protagonists relives a larger period of time, and only once, instead of repeating it.

Was the movie Ender's Game as good as the book?

Not even close.  Not even in the same ballpark.  The book has a sense of style and language in the way that Card writes that the movie can't begin to grasp.  There is also a lot of detail that's completely left out.I would say that this movie is the PERFECT example of why books are superior to movies.  There's just a... substance to the book, not only in the way Card writes, but in the way your imagination creates the characters and places in your head that simply doesn't translate to the "forced" imagery of the screen. This is not to say it was a bad movie, but as far as a faithful and positive representation of the story of "Ender's Game", it fails completely.

Similarities & differences between the book and film for Anne Frank?

I'm just naming them from the classic 1950's black and white movie.

Similarities:
Anne names her diary Kitty
In both she gives the people living with them false names (the Van Daan's were really the Van Pels's)
Anne has a troubled relationship with her mother
A thief breaks in
Anne shares a room with Mr. Van Daan
In both Anne voices her envy of Margot

Differences:
the movie begins with Anne's father, Otto, going back to the secret annex and being given the diary
the movie takes place as a flashback scene
in the movie Anne gets a chance to say goodbye and end her journal, in the book it abruptly stops
the scene with the Gestapo taking them away is shown in the movie, in the book we know nothing of it
the book goes extensively into Anne's beauty routine, the movie does not.
the book has Peter and Anne's relationship being slightly longer. She even has a heart to heart about it with Otto in the book.
