What Can You Tell Me About Margaret Thatcher

What did Margaret Thatcher do?

I don't want to know people's opinions about how much they hate her or anything I just want fact.

What she did when in power and why. Also what effect it had.

Again please don't use this as a moment to express your hate - thank you :)

How long could Margaret Thatcher have lasted?

She was beyond her sell by date by the time she finally left.  Where she did make a lot of difference to the UK, there were already a lot of people who were questioning her mental state by the late 80s. There was also the natural change of opinion that comes with time. Where people were happy enough to vote for her for the first few elections, by the last one, it was more a matter of 'the devil you know' as the alternative was Neil Kinnock - who did more for keeping her in power than anyone! However, eventually, the Tories smelt blood and realised there was a chance to get rid of the mad old bat. Thatcher, having been in power too long to realise that the job was only ever temporary, completely misread the situation and thought she could fight her way out of the problem. If she had won that battle, there would have been another as soon as the chance appeared and there was no way she was going to see another election as leader. Every political career ends in failure! ;)

What was your opinion of Margaret Thatcher?

There is no doubt that she made lots of decisions for the better of England. Many people, however may have suffered with these decisions- but some do have to suffer for the righter of all -

Sometimes we must choose between what is easy and right- Thatcher went by that belief. She did what was right over all for the better of her country (really the Queen's country) however many people did get the down low of her decisions.
She did good things, though. I don't have such an opinion on her -she was tough, but i definitely think people picketing at her funeral is pretty terrible.

Was Margaret Thatcher a dictator?

Margaret Thatcher was an elected member of parliament, elected as leader of her party and winner of three national elections as Prime Minister.

That is democracy, not dictatorship.

The Argentinians broke international law and UN resolutions by invading a British Colony which was not seeking independence. The international community attempted to persuade Argentina to diplomatically withdraw its troops from The Falkland Islands - they didn't, so the UK had the choice of using military intervention to free its own citizens or to walk away and allow them to become Argentinian citizens against their will.

Argentina took a huge risk in an attempt to drum up support for a failing military junta - they gambled on the fact that it was such a massive operation for the British to get a relief force to the island. Their gamble failed.

None of this was Margaret Thatcher's fault - she didn't invade another country.

Would Margaret Thatcher have made a better job of Brexit than Theresa May?

Would Margaret Thatcher have made a better job of Brexit than Theresa May?Margaret Thatcher, for all her dogmatism and hardness, would have taken hold of the situation and devised an outcome that would be the best for the country. She wouldn’t give a damn what anyone thought of her for doing what she felt was best for the UK.She was not a populist focused upon staying in power by doing whatever caused least angst to her voting base. She couldn’t care less about a minority of whingers in her party - she simply wouldn’t give them anything important to do.Would she even have led the country towards Brexit? I doubt it. She would have stood up in front of 10 Downing Street, and thanked the public for the advice they gave through the advisory referendum, and then completely ignored the Brexiteer demands to sign Article 50, unless and until they presented a plan that was acceptable to both the UK and the EU. The Brexiteers themselves would have been given the job, as a “working party” to devise the exit plan.Meanwhile, Mrs T would have continued with other matters that were of immediate importance and required urgent action… like solving the crisis of “Austerity” and the furore over “Universal Credit” and the financing of the NHS. We’d now be arguing about whether she was doing a good job with those matters, and “Brexit” would be a side issue, waiting for a plan.

What is your favourite Margaret Thatcher quote, and why?

Prime minister and the cabinet were sitting down at a restaurant.Waiter: "What will you have?"Thatcher: "Steak,"Waiter: "And the vegetables?"Thatcher: "They'll have steak too".OK, that wasn't real, but it reflected the way she was perceived. (It was from the TV show Spitting Image). Here's a real one though, regarding South Africa:"No sanctions - Nelson Mandela is a terrorist."

What do British people think about Margaret Thatcher?

A brilliant Prime Minister, at first. She was tough and dealt firmly with the Miners Union's politically motivated strike action. Everyone knows her, who knows Arthur Scargill? She was a very strong woman, negotiating our rebate with the EU. Her only fault, but a major one, was that she stopped listening to everyone who disagreed with her, neither her Cabinet, nor the voters. It cost her her position as PM.
