What Did The Renaissance Mean For Society At The Time

What does it mean to be a renaissance man now?

We have been reading about Leonardo da Vinci in my class. He is considered to be the epitome of a renaissance man. What does it mean to be a renaissance man in today's society as far as qualities goes? and how have these qualities had such an influence on western culture?

What does Renaissance mean?

Definition of renaissance (noun)
the revival of letters, and then of art, which marks the transition from medieval to modern time.

Definition: The Renaissance is a name given to the "rebirth" of classical knowledge, art and learning that developed in Europe, but especially Italy, during the 14th through the 16th centuries. Renaissance thought is characterized by a rejection of traditional scholasticism and a focus on acquiring knowledge through the newly developing natural sciences. The Renaissance served as the foundation for the later Protestant Reformation.

Renaissance \Re*nais`sance"\ (F. re-n[asl]`s[aum]Ns"; E. r[-e]-n[=a]s"sans), n. [F., fr. rena[^i]tre to be born again. Cf. Renascence.]

A new birth, or revival. Specifically:
(a) The transitional movement in Europe, marked by the revival of classical learning and art in Italy in the 15th century, and the similar revival following in other countries.
(b) The style of art which prevailed at this epoch.

The Renaissance was rather the last stage of the Middle Ages, emerging from ecclesiastical and feudal despotism, developing what was original in medi[ae]val ideas by the light of classic arts and letters. --J. A. Symonds (Encyc. Brit.).

What was society like during the Renaissance?

This is an extremely broad question but here are a few thoughts. It was in a state of rapid transformation, largely driven by the printing press amd reform thinking.Wealthy noble children, including girls, had access to a humanist education, which placed emphasis on humanity over divinity and paved the way for reform thinking. In 1517, Martin Luther, tired of the Medici Pope Leo X selling indulgences, nailed his 95 Theses to the church door, further sparking reform. Constant wars impacted many people’s lives. Sea exploration, such as the journey of Christopher Columbus, was commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella. Colonial expansion under the crown of Castile began.Tens of thousands of women were killed using a manual called The Hammer of Witches, which was a bestseller for 200 years, even after it was banned, outsold only by The Holy Bible.

How is the Renaissance a bridge?

Well, this was a period in which people were questioning certain received ideas and the influence of the Church. They understood themselves to be separate from the past, and one result was that a serious interest in studying history, classical literature, art, and philosophy developed. To some extent, this had the effect of beginning to loosen the grip of the Church on culture and socio-political life, and with the advent of the printing press, new ideas and interests could spread much more rapidly.

These new developments helped lead to the Reformation of the 16th century and even to a slowly developing interest in science and the natural world, which eventually blossomed into the scientific revolution of the 17th century. Ultimately, they led to the Enlightenment of the 18th century.

That's putting it all very simply, but it should give you a start on some things to investigate and think about.

What time period did the Renaissance give way to? Did the Renaissance have anything to do with?

Renaissance means rebirth in French and refers to the rebirth of European culture in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The knowledge and wisdom of the Greeks and Romans was largely lost in Europe during the Dark and Middle Ages. It was the Arabs who, as traders, brought many of these ideas, and a lot of new ones, back to Europe. The Renaissance was centred in Italy, where were based the city states who traded with the Arabs.

The next great change in European thinking was the so-called Enlightenment of the 18th century. This is when man became God, science replaced religion and secular humanism, the atheistic religion we practice today, was born.

As a Christian I say this is responsible for all that's wrong with western society, as well as much of what is good about it.

What is the word Renaissance and why is it so important?

Well the word renaissance means revival or rebirth and if the renaissance had not occurred the world would be a much different place. The Renaissance is believed to have happened from the years 1400-1600. The renaissance brought back ideas of geometry, algebra, astronomy, and chemistry. The renaissance also had an affect on art and architecture because it brought back ideas from Greek and Roman times. People began to experiment on the human body. People no longer just read the bible for answers but they actually started to learn and discover things for them selves some times proving the bible wrong. One of the main people of the renaissance was Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest minds of all time. Not only was he an artist but an inventor, and a scientist. He experimented on the human anatomy and discovered how the body worked.

Lorenzo di Medici was a Renaissance Man because he had wide interests and was an expert in several areas.?

Mae Jemison is a true renaissance woman. After conquering poverty and getting all she could from the Chicago public school system, Dr. Jemison went on to earn degrees in chemical engineering and African Studies from Stanford University. She earned her medical degree from Cornell. She then decided to pursue her interests in Space travel and became an astronaut. She loves acting, so she followed that dream and did some guest appearances on Star Trek Next Generation (of course!). After her time at NASA, she founded a research company, pursuing her entrepreneurial goals.

Her bio lists her personal interests as: traveling, graphic arts, photography, sewing, skiing, collecting African Art, languages (Russian, Swahili, Japanese), weight training, has an extensive dance and exercise background and is an avid reader.

If this is not a renaissance woman, I cannot imagine who is!!

How is Renaissance art different from Medieval art?

One of the major differences between medieval art and art from the High Renaissance is the way they approached the ancient Greco-Roman world. While the medieval is too expansive a term and may refer to the Romanesque, the Gothic, the Byzantine, or the myriad range of styles that came in the thousand-year period following 400AD, this art was decidedly Christian and dominated by concerns portrayed in the Bible. The High Renaissance Classicism of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century is remarkable for its attention to detail and naturalism, but most importantly, to its attention to antiquity.See, for example, this fresco (Sea of Galatea) by Raphael of Urbino, in Agostino Chigi’s villa in Trastevere in Rome, now called Villa Farnesina. Raphael’s depiction of the classical is important because this was the age of humanism — scholars went back to ancient texts and read them in their original Greek or Latin, instead of error-riddled translations made by their forebearers. This piqued a revival of the Classical, and was supported by the Della Rovere Pope (Sixtus IV and his nephew Julius II) and the Medici Popes (Leo X, Clemente VII, and to some extent Paul III, who was educated at the court of Lorenzo the Magnificent). The pagan was no longer antithetical to the Christian. While Medieval education was centered around the seven liberal arts, they made no such effort to espouse the humanities and invigorate them with new, focused scholarship. The end of the Medieval era was marked by the flight of the Papacy from Rome to Avignon, and the return of the Popes to Rome heralded the new Renaissance period, which meant there was a lot of construction and new ideas to build. The Renaissance is (arguably) said to have ended with the sack of Rome in 1527–8 by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who imprisoned Pope Clemente VII in the Castel San’Angelo, ten minutes walking from St. Peter’s.
