What do i do to become a dentist?

You will need to go to college for 6-8 years (at least 2 years undergrad, but most people gain admission with 4, and 4 years of dental school). You don't need to go to medical school to become a dentist (and I don't see why you would want to). There is one specialty (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) that requires both medical and dental degrees (I know it does in the UK/Australia/NZ, but I can't confirm this for the US, sorry), but if you don't want to be that, then it would be very pointless to go through both medical and dental schools. I would expect the pay to be around $150-200 K per year as an assistant dentist (i.e. a dentist working for another, not to be confused with a "dental assistant"!) after 1 or 2 years of experience, but it may very well be close to 2x that if you were to run your own practice. And no, you don't really have to be smart to become a dentist, it's a lot more about hard work than intelligence. Getting accepted into a dental degree would require at least some level of intelligence, but after you're in, it gets easier, passing your courses is almost guaranteed if you put in enough effort - remember that dentistry is all about memorising stuff, NOT understanding complex concepts (that is what requires you to be "smart", in my opinion).

Do you need to do residency to become a dentist?

1. Most states don't require a residency. If they do (I know New York is one of them), it is a one-year residency to be a general dentist, and you can do that in a hospital setting (called a GPR) or a dental school clinic setting (called an AEGD.) But no, in almost every state you will take two sets of national Board exams and then licensure exams in whichever state you want to practice in. And that's all you need!

If you want to be a specialist, you apply to specialty school either near the end of dental school or whenever you want afterwards and those programs range from 2-3 years for most of them to 6 years for oral surgery. (Specialties are things like orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and pedodontics.)

2. You should have a GPA of above a 3.5 for your undergrad degree, though it's possible to get in with a 3.2-3.5 range if you have other strong parts of your application. You will also need to take the prerequisite courses, complete a bachelors, and do a certain amount of dental office shadowing/essay writing/letters of recommendation...that sort of thing. Also, all of your credits for your bachelors need to come from a 4-year university and not a community college.

3. You pay for everything at once since you won't be able to have a job in dental school. So they budget you for EVERYTHING....rent, food, transportation, tuition, instrument fees, etc. For four years, most public schools are around $100,000-150,000 and private schools are around $330,000. Eesh!

4. Dental school is four years after undergrad.

What high school classes do i need to take to become a dentist?

High school and college students who want to become dentists should take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, health, and mathematics. College undergraduates planning on applying to dental school are required to take many science courses. Because of this, some choose a major in a science, such as biology or chemistry, while others take the required science coursework while pursuing a major in another subject.

Dentistry requires diagnostic ability and manual skills. Dentists should have good visual memory, excellent judgment regarding space and shape, a high degree of manual dexterity, and scientific ability. Good business sense, self-discipline, and good communication skills are helpful for success in private practice.

All dental schools require applicants to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). When selecting students, schools consider scores earned on the DAT, applicants’ grade point averages, and information gathered through recommendations and interviews. Competition for admission to dental school is keen.

Dental school usually lasts 4 academic years. Studies begin with classroom instruction and laboratory work in science, including anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. Beginning courses in clinical sciences, including laboratory techniques, are also completed. During the last 2 years, students treat patients, usually in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists. Most dental schools award the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Others award an equivalent degree, Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

Hope this helps. =)

How do I become a dentist for the military (US)?

The easiest way is to apply for and receive the HPSP for dental school. This means that when you are applying to dental school, you get in touch with an Air Force recruiter and he or she will arrange interviews and all the paperwork for you. You will be commissioned an O-1 in the reserves for the branch of the military that you have selected. You should select the branch based on your grades and the spots available, which varies from year to year- don’t apply to multiple branches in the same year, since each branch will frown upon you considering other branches of the military. If your grades are particularly competitive, aim high and seek the scholarship with the Air Force. Otherwise, you’re looking at Army or Navy. If you are accepted, they will pay for your tuition, books, supplies and even give you a generous stipend during school. Additionally, you will attend officer training of approximately 5 weeks duration prior to being brought on to active duty.If you are already a dentist, then contact and Air Force recruiter. They will need documentation for a bunch of stuff like your license and other information for their internal credentialing system. If you want to make a lot of money, then military dentistry may not be the best fit. If you join now, you will have to fund your own retirement, although the military will match your contributions up to 5% of your salary. I joined since I wanted job security and didn’t want to manage a practice. I just want to do dentistry, be there for my family and serve my country. So for me, joining the Air Force was a great choice.
