What Do I Need To Do To Get The Front Wheels To Lock In On A 91 Chevy K 1500

What are reasons your steering wheel won't lock?

I assume that you are referring to your steering wheel not locking in position after you stop the vehicle and take out the key? There are several possible reasons for this.1. The cog that fits into the detent on the steering column is broken and needs to be replaced.2. The detent on the steering column is worn or broken3. You have not turned the wheel far enough for the cog to find a detent. Pull the wheel first to the left, and then to the right to find the spot.4. The actuator from the solenoid to the cog is broken. To repair this will require the cover on the steering column to be removed, and probably need to have the steering wheel removed as well. Take it to a qualified shop or dealer for this. Incorrect actions could result in damage to the parts, or even the deployment of the air bag on the steering wheel. The exact disassembly required will differ for each manufacturer and possible model of vehicle. If you have a Chilton's manual for your vehicle, you can look up the repair to see what is involve.

Chevy K1500 4-Wheel drive problem.?

The switch on the transfer case that energizes the TLA (thermal linear actuator) on the front axle is bad. The TLA on the front axle is not the problem.

I am unsure where the switch is located on the t-case. You can follow the wires from the actuator on the front axle differential to see where they go, and you will end up finding the switch.

I will have to look in a book when I get home to see if I can find the exact location.

on our k10 we can shift in/out of 4wd hi range, at up to 45mph. while moving, take you foot off of the accelerator, before shifting. you do this with the transmission in gear. shifting into 4wd should only be done on slippery or off road surfaces.

we use our truck to drive in slick winter driving and shift in/out of 4wd often (from snow/Ice covered road to/from cleared roads)

Why does the steering wheel lock up while driving?

What Causes the Steering Wheel to Lock Up? | eHow Losing control of your car's steering is a terrifying experience, one that can lead to a crash with horrific consequences. If this happens to you, then you must try to bring your vehicle to a stop at once and determine the cause of steering wheel lock-up before you drive your car again. There are a number of reasons why your car's steering has suddenly locked up including:Key MechanismNot every steering wheel problem occurs when you have the transmission engaged and are heading down the road. Sometimes, drivers report that their steering wheel stays locked even after inserting the key into the ignition. When that happens, the car probably cannot be started let alone driven. More than likely the key assembly has worn out and needs to be replaced. However, before calling your auto mechanic, try to move the wheels to the left and to the right as sometimes the steering column "catches," a problem that can be resolved if you jiggle the wheel.Lock PinGeneral Motors issued a pair of recalls for the C5 Chevrolet Corvette (1997-2004 models) due to problems with locked steering. In addition to being locked while starting, owners complained that in some cases their cars could be driven but with no control of steering. This problem is due to a lock pin that fails to withdraw fully, allowing contact between the pin and lock plate. Visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA ) website (see Resources) for information about recalls #04006B and #04006C or call your Chevrolet dealer.ConclusionWhile the three causes mentioned here are among the top reasons why a steering wheel may lock up, there could be other reasons. Contact an auto mechanic for assistance, or if you are handy with repairs, consult a Haynes or Chilton repair manual (or anything similar) for guidance.

How long can I drive with a bad wheel bearing?

From my experience until it seizes…and it will.I noticed the first issue while driving on a highway at about 140kph on a wet road. The car felt twitchy from time to time…just snatching a little to one side every now and again. Eventually there was a ping that sounded like I had thrown a rock under the wheel well. After I got home, it was about a 150km journey, I checked the rear wheel and saw that the bearing cap had gone and grease had spilled out of the bearing. So that was the ping I heard while driving the previous day.Next morning I tried to drive it to the dealer, but could only make it about 2km to the nearest Canadian Tire outlet. The scream from the bearing was intense and the wheel was dragging. The rollers in the bearing had lost all their case hardening and were wearing down in diameter. Eventually they started to catch under the bearing cage. At this point the bearing is not far from seizing all together, and soon after I might have been overtaken by a wayward wheel. A three wheeled car, even those that are intended to be that way, doesn’t handle well.Don’t do it. Get the bearing replaced today but don’t take it to Canadian Tire who gave me the car back without it’s bearing cap because it didn’t come in with one…doh!PS. a failing bearing can allow the wheel to cant/camber pushing the brake pads off the disk (they normally float just off the disks). The pedal will go to the floor until you pump it up…something you may not even think to do in the panic.

How many inches do I need to lift my 1991 Chevy Caprice to put 24's on it?

You don't have to do anything to it. As long as you go with a 255/30/24 or a 275/25/24 tire, they will fit right on. But I do recommend centering the back wheels with a BMR fabrication kit. They make extended control arms. They are kind of pricy, around $500. If not you may need to shave the fender in the rear.
(Not mandatory, but its easier to go with a 24x9 or 24x9.5 inch rim rather than a 24x10. If it helps any, I have a kit that will center the back wheels that was never used $100. If interested email me ladubbs@yahoo.com.)
