What Do They Look For At Film/acting Schools

Acting School....NYFA? LS?

Personally, I would go for Stasberg over NYFA. I've heard good things about the NYFA programs and know some people who've done them, but it sounds like it's geared towards teaching acting for film (duh, but the title).
I'm from the camp who thinks acting is acting and while film acting is a style of acting (like shakespeare, greek, musical theatre, comedy, commedia dell arte, etc) having a solid base in theatre acting and all that it emcompasses will serve you better and is really the foundation for all the styles.
Lee Strasberg teaches the "method" technique of acting, so if that appeals to you, go for it. NYFA has short courses that maybe you can supplement your studies with.
Whether you do it in NY or LA I think depends on your goals. If you want to do film/tv, go to LA. If you want to do theatre, go to NY.

Best acting school in NY?

Well of course Juilliard and NYU Tisch. There is the New School too at Eugene Lang. Also Marymount Manhattan has a good program and of course AADA.

* Normally I don't like to say anything derogative about any school but as someone listed the New York FIlm Academy, I couldn't let that just stand. NYFA is considered almost a joke in regards to it's film an acting courses. All you would have to do is look at the alumni record and you will see little in the way of working actors. You will see names of children of famous actors there who couldn't get into any place else or get work once they graduated.

How can I get into the film acting industry?

I like Cyrilla Baer’s answer, but also want to add that you don’t go to film school to become an actor. Film school teaches you film production, not acting. It is where you go to become a director, producer, cinematographer, production designer, or any of the other 200 jobs on a film set that are not in front of the camera. It is actually much easier in the UK to follow a career path before acting, then switch to acting when you are more mature. Very few young actors from pretty much any where are able to get work, especially right out of school.See Jason Statham - Wikipedia (Olympic-level diver that became a model), Vinnie Jones - Wikipedia (ex-footballer). Mark Strong - Wikipedia studied acting in school after aborting his first year in law school, but didn’t get a job on TV until he was 30.Also, look at these guys. They spend a lot of time in the gym. You really need to be fit in order to achieve a career outside of theater. I personally don’t like how image conscious TV and film are, always requiring perfect people (except comedic roles), but it is sadly the state of the industry.Be aware that the core path is that of Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and other British actors: start acting school in university, or even earlier. Apparently you missed that chance, but as I’ve pointed out, that is not the only path.
