What Do You Call People In Financial District

Staying at Union Square vs. Financial District?

I personally would not want to stay in the Fisherman's Wharf or Marina as they are kind of out of the way to the city center. The financial district is pretty deserted at night and a lot of the businesses close early so if you find you need asprin or toothpaste at 11 at night you are going to have to travel a way to find it.

For your first visit Union Square is probably the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located with lots of public transportation options and within walking distance of most of the tourist areas, like Chinatown, Northbeach and even Fisherman's Wharf

Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive so forgoing the rental car is a good idea. Muni offers multi day passes that are good for buses, trolley, light rail and the cable cars [unique experience but $5 per ride].

Joie de Vivre http://www.jdvhotels.com has several hotels in the Union Square area in different price points. Each hotel is unique and they have a cool free program where they match you with a local person, called a Golden Gate Greeter, who shares your interests to spend a few hours with you and familiarize yourself with the city. http://www.goldengategreeter.c...

What would you call the area where rich people live?

Nowadays, it would be called a 'gated community.' (No, this does not include prisons. :-))

In the old days, it would have been nicknamed the 'high rent district.'

Middle class? Lived on the right side of the tracks as opposed to the wrong side of the tracks. ??

What is London's financial center called?

I live in the City. I disagree with explanations in the longer answers here: It is not true that the Roman area of London equates to the current area of the City. One of the more prominent roads is called London Wall, because it follows the course of the roman walled fortifications, which are still visible in various parks and gardens along the way. The relevant boundary (which manages to encompass a major hospital, a cathedral and a meat market) was drawn much later, when London consisted of the City of London and the City of Westminster, both of which had their specialities and preferences. It is also not true to say that the banks at Canary Wharf are City institutions. Very noticeably the CW banks are much more global players - principally Citibank (USA) and HSBC, which many forget is an abbreviation for “Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation”.What binds the City together is the network of Livery Companies - the Goldsmiths, the Fletchers, and even the Information Technologists. Global players like to have offices in the City (I remember the excitement as the Japanese arrived, for example) but often have trouble assimilating with City culture. I watched Salesforce get that spectaculariy wrong, to take one recent case in point.

Is Hong Kong still the financial hub of the world?

I don’t believe it ever surpassed London or Manhattan as "financial hub of the world" in earlier days--much less today. That said, Joseph makes a good point that, for Asia and its time zones, HK and Singapore are still tops.  Shanghai is coming up though.

Why do we call people in Boston "Southies"?

No one actually calls people Southies.South Boston (NOT South End) is often called Southie, but the name doesn’t extend to people.Southie has historically been a working class Irish neighborhood, however recently it has become popular with young professionals. Those working in the financial district are only a short train ride away, Back Bay being a slightly longer train ride, and the Waterfront (generally referred to as Seaport) is one of the biggest sites of real estate development in the city. High end malls and office buildings are springing up on every block.
