Why do people really ask what do you do for a living?People that ask what you do for a living are usually in a social setting and in a “getting to know you” kind of atmosphere. They want to know a little bit about you in order to decide what kind of conversational topics to discuss.If you say you are a rocket scientist, they are not likely to say something about how ridiculous common core math is or complain about their children’s homework load. If you say you are a tattoo artist, they probably won’t complain about the cost of student loans. Whatever you say, it gives them the chance to say, “Wow, that is really interesting, How did you get involved with….”People just try to get a little background of what “kind” of person you and it also opens the door for you to talk. Asking open ended questions is the best way to begin a conversation. You can get shy people to come out of their shell by asking them something they may want to talk about. You can ask if they have a pet, a hobby, a favorite book or tv show. It doesn’t matter what they say, it all gives you a platform to build on.

Is it rude to ask someone what they do for a living (they might have a job they are not proud of)?

It’s not rude to ask - but when the answer is something very awful - you need to be ready to politely exclaim: “Wow! Well I’m really glad there is someone out there cleaning public bathrooms because it’s a thankless job and I really appreciate when it’s done well.”…and if the person fails to change the subject - you’re going to need to follow up with: “So what make your job the hardest?”Get it right - and you did good - but it’s not easy.

Do people ask what you do for a living so that they can calculate the level of respect to give?
