What Do You Think About When Your Mind Wanders

My mind wanders too much! help?

MiB.. That's what happens to even the best of students from time to time..
It's difficult to be a student.. to study every single day during exams..
to remain focused.. to make yourself want to study each single day..

Things that help:
1. Eat foods that are good for concentration and your mind in general
- kiwis, fish with omega 3 (tuna, salmon), no fast food, not too sugary things (help for 30 minutes and then you're down again), search a healthy snack (I have once read that crunchy things help you concentrate as well, like apples, carrots..), nuts, ...
2. have enough rest at night!!! Normally, we need 8 hours a night, never go below 6 hours if you have to study/ work on assignments all day
3. look for something that relaxes you, it could be tea, reading a book, taking a bath/ a shower.. Do that when you feel you can't concentrate..
4. Exercise each day! even if it's just for 30 minutes, go for a run.. whatever you like to do..
5. take "smart" breaks.. meaning 10 minutes after 1 hour of studying.. and a real break that relaxes you.. no, not Y!A ;) because once you sign in.. you KEEP signed in, lol :D I usually put my iPod in and lay down in my bed.. with my eyes closed.. :)
6. Look for things to make you look forward to.. meet friends, go for a drink when you've deserved it..
7. make time tables, a calender for a month and stick up to it! Hang it in your room to remind you of your tasks! Use small notes as well..
8. Look up for some motivational quotes and hang them in your room.. whenever you feel like not studying get up and read some quotes.. to inspire you..
9. Think about how privileged you are to study! Don't waste it.. and think about your goal and dreams.. how bad you want to get your diploma.. and believe in yourself!
10. Keep your desk tidy.. and get rid of the things that distract you!!
11. If NOTHING helped, you need a change of environment.. go to another room and study there.. I have just discovered a good study room for me.. it's across our library and a lot of students go there.. it keeps me motivated, seeing others study as well.. :)

I hope it helped somewhat and good luck! ;)

When you let your mind wander, do you let it roam free or do you keep it on a leash?

In my mind a mind wandering about is free association. lol Keeping it on a leash is disciplined focused thought. If you want to keep it on a leash (the more recommend approach) you should write things down, 'mind mapping' is useful. If you want to let it wander here and there, you can think of one thing and then another and then another. You will never be able to capture the true essence of the association.
To answer your question, in my case I let it wander way too much. I need to be a bit more disciplined. It's like watching TV, you don't think. That's why I like to predict what is going to happen to the story ahead in order to keep my mind moving. Otherwise it becomes stagnant.

Thanks for reminding me. You have shown me the way.

How can I stop my mind from wandering?

Distraction is a common problem nowadays. But when there is a problem, we need to find an appropriate solution for that. The best way for gaining back concentration is - meditation. It helps in relaxing human mind that further helps to connect more with the inner self. This also stimulates brain neurons by using light and sound brainwave entrainment system. It will help you to gain a lot of inner peace and a content mind. All you need to do is just sit and relax while using this audiovisual device. The other thing that wearied brain requires is peaceful sleep. With the help of these cognitive enhancement devices, you will get a sense of calmness that will give you a sound sleep.BBC has also seconded this new Neurotronics device to be very effective. It emits waves like alpha, beta, theta, etc. Just make sure to use these devices like Laxman daily. Get more information at mylaxman.com and start meditating now! Your mind won’t wander anymore.

My mind wanders a lot and thinks a lot. If I want to do something, so many thoughts come against it and it makes me crazy. I've decided to do meditation for the first time. How should I do it?

Dear,The word meditation is often misinterpreted. Basically all words comes to us with their conditioned definitions and for me as well they would have remained the same. But since I got the unique opportunity to connect to Shri Prashant, I  could get so much clarity on life and observe the deep conditioning that has been ingrained into my life.Watch this video to understand the real meaning of meditation :Shri Prashant on "The real meaning of Meditation"Here is a beautiful excerpt from  one of his discourses on Meditation :-"What do you call as meditation? What do you mean by meditation?Do you mean some techniques that you may have read somewhere? They may be helpful but they are not the real things because all mediation and everything is stuff of your doing, it is coming from your mind. Mind to achieve something, so it starts doing something. But if that meditation can quieten your mind for a while then it’s worth it.Then the question will be, ‘What do you want, the quietness for a while or the quietness of the entire day?’Or do you want meditation to be something that is limited to 15 minutes a day and after that you are back to your old ways.Meditation is like exercising in a gym, that you go and exercise and you are done for the day.Go for meditativeness, not mediation, because meditation is a confined, limited activity. Meditativeness is a way of life.Meditativeness means constant attention. Meditation is a tool, a technique of limited utility. Meditativeness is, ‘Wherever I am, whatever I am doing; walking, eating, sleeping, playing in the classroom, in the playground, in the room, in the cinema hall, wherever I am, I am not lost, I am not unconscious’, this is meditativeness. Meditativeness is not being serious, even while cracking jokes I understand what is happening.Meditativeness is joy. There is nothing serious about it."For more clarity, do read the following articles :-http://prashantadvait.com/2014/0...http://prashantadvait.com/2015/0...You may visit his Quora profile as well and read his responses to so many genuine seekers.Quora :- Shri Prashant TripathiListen to the discourses on YouTube :-https://www.youtube.com/channel/...https://www.youtube.com/channel/...Read more on :- www.prashantadvait.com

Why does my mind start to wander when I read?

This is common in meditation as well: Catch your thoughts and release them. If necessary, keep a piece of paper nearby, write down any persistent thoughts that enter your head, and agree to pay further attention to them AFTER you are done reading for a specific amount of time.

I think our minds are programmed to wander, so that we are better able to pay attention to the world around us. It's part of our human ability to reason.

My mind wanders a lot while studying what should I do?

Mind-wandering (sometimes referred to as task-unrelated thought) is the experience of thoughts not remaining on a single topic for a long period of time, particularly when people are engaged in an attention-demanding task.Change YourselfAnyone who finds their attention being hijacked by Facebook, daydreaming or a sudden urge to put the kettle on – there is good reason to think that improvement is possible. One need to try hard to change himself and make himself more focused towards achieving his goalTemptations. One needs to manage his temptation in order to focus on a particular matter. Mind can be diverted by various methods like facebook, whatsapp etc. One should have strong will power to stop himself from being attracted towards these things when one has more important issues to handle.FocusSo one should maintain his focus on the task at hand rather than unimportant work like whatsapp or facebook. Even if your mind still wanders ask yourself “Is it really important than the task at hand. If it is then it doesn’t matter but if it isn’t you seriously need to think about it and focus and do the wok will full concentration”Concentration“While you breathe in, you follow your in-breath from the beginning to the end. If your in-breath lasts three or four seconds, then your mindfulness also lasts three or four seconds. Breathing in, I follow my in-breath all the way through. Breathing out, I follow my out-breath all the way through. From the beginning of my out-breath to the end of my out-breath, my mind is always with it. Therefore, mindfulness becomes uninterrupted, and the quality of your concentration is improved.”

My mind wanders off a lot, what does it mean?

__Sounds like Attention Deficit Disorder, buuuttt only a Psychologist can tell you for sure.
__I'm pretty sure a quick Google or Youtube search can bring up long lists of famous people believed to have ADHD, (Michael Phelps, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison).
__If some day you are diagnosed with it, think of it like a labyrinth; if it was just a straight line, there'd be no point!
__I was diagnosed with ADD, and yes I do take a stimulant med. Honestly I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to me. I'm ALWAYS on time, I'm getting straight A's, I'm funnier, I'm cleaner, and I'd say I'm all around happier.
__It's almost like the med is a cheat code to fast-forward through all the chores, homework, appointments, fine print, B.S., yada, yada, yada.
__The med does have a few side effects. I get neck aches occasionally and sometimes I find it hard to sleep... BUT I'M GETTING STRAIGHT A's. Easily. It's like not even funny.

Do you find your mind wandering a lot?

Most people do...

You know why? Read on...

Most people don't run their own lives; their lives are run by a nefarious little non-entity called EGO. Ego loves to keep us off balance by wearing us down as youngsters and making us think that we are separate from everyone else on the planet and everything in the Universe. One of the ways it does that is by coercing us to identify with our minds, or what we "think" we are or should be.

By us allowing Ego to run our lives, we give up a LOT. Autonomy, thinking for ourselves, and we are cursed with our mind constantly "thinking" about nothing. Ego also enjoys mind-numbing things like inane television shows (expecially "reality" TV--which is anything but real!), commercials, sitcoms, etc.

It takes effort, but once you get started it gets easier and easier to stop your mind from wandering. So, how do you train yourself to stop your mind from wandering? Stop doing what you've been doing and educate yourself along a different path.

Read Eckhart Tollie's "The Power of NOW" to start. There are lots of other books, too. Dan Millman's books, Wayne Dyer, Dali Lama, and books like that.

You'll thank yourself in only a few short weeks!
