What Do You Think Of Greek Football Teams

Which Greek football (soccer) team should I support?

I'm a big football (soccer) fan and I love watching it. I watch the Greek League, but I'm not sure if I should become a fan of Olympiakos or Panathinaikos...I know I want to be a fan of one or the other, but I can't decide which. I know Olympiakos is doing better now, but I'd support either, can anyone help me decide which would be a better team to support and why?

If people could just give their opinions that would be great, I want to have a team to support during derby matches!

Thanks!

What do you think about Greek football?

Greek football is in decline because almost all of its professional teams are in financial turmoil and many are essentially bankrupt. They cannot afford to pay for contracts big enough to retain their best players, or invest in football academies and football fields. This is partly a result of the huge economic cisis the country is in, but not exclusively: the decline had started many years earlier with the burst of the bubble of subscriber TV (NOVA vs Alpha Digital, a story going back to 2004).The situation is worsened by endemic corruption and cronyism within the Hellenic Football Association which does not allow it to develop its leagues commercially: for example the 1st division teams formed the "Superleague" largely to keep TV money from flowing down to the 2nd and 3rd division clubs and the non-pro categories. Also some of the teams (most notably Olympiakos) opted to sell the broadcasting rights for their matches individually, this reducing the league's overall bargaining power. But also corruption and cronyism are significantly degrading the spectacle itself: we have been witnessing consecutive scandals touching the referees, sports newspapers that have no means of existence other than paying lip service to powerful club owners and no purpose other than breeding hooliganism, under the table deals between club owners to perpetuate one or another's domination on top of the league's charts. It is no wonder that there is no competition any more for the Championship and that Olympiakos will win it this year as well as the next, as its president has the League, the Association (and now even Piraeus' mayor!) wrapped around his finger and also is the only one who has money for transfers. All in all, Greek football sucks.

What do you think of German football?

The German national team is a very good team. They are big and strong but dont lack pace and subltleness. This was pre and during the last word cup.Currently they don't look great. As if they are still hung over from the party that's winning the world cup.It must have been a huge ego booster to thrash Brazil like that. Maybe they assume they will just win instead of playing with passion and guile to win.A great example of this and a great benefit for me (ireland), is their current qualification campaign for the European championship. They have performed poorly and inconsistently. Loosing to Poland St the mark for a bad campaign,  then a home draw to ireland. Was deemed a huge failure, not to mention the friendly loss to the USA.Here's a look at the table thanks to fotmob.apkThe German league on the other hand is an exciting league to watch. The leagues personality is that of a technical powerhouse where technique and power seem more important than pace and "beautiful" football. I haven't watched so much football these days as I'm living in north America now and the time zone means I mainly watch highlights and read other people's views.

What do Greeks think about Turkish football clubs and their fans?

I am a football fan and I regularly watch many matches of the Greek league and also the matches against European teams. It’s been a couple of years since the last time I went to a stadium but I do go to coffee places and bars with friends and others in order to enjoy a beer while chatting and watching some football.Turkish clubs or fans are never discussed unless some Greek team is about to play against them. As soon as the match is over then things go back to how they were with nobody paying attention to what the Turkish teams do, in their league, in Europe ect.I can’t say there is any special feeling good or bad towards them. Just another team like all else.

Do you think Arab money is spoiling the spirit of football?

Absolutely not. It's good for football. For the leagues around the world. More teams will be able to compete for the league or the Champions League. It makes the league interesting and increase the chances of having a different winner every year.Besides, these teams having seen pain and hard moments. Isn't it nice that they are now seeing some glorious moments. More quality players will step into the leagues.I understand that the rival team's fans don't appreciate it. But look at it from a broader perspective.

What do you think of 'BBC' the defensive trio in football?

Italy has always been the father of defensive line ups ,remember Arigo Sacchi’s Milan then search it the line up was Franco Baresi, Alessandro Costacurta, Mauro Tassotti and Paolo Maldini. They just conceded 15 goals the whole season.Similar case that of Juventusthat says it all.

A2A thanks VadimWhat, what, what , what , what , what , what , what , what ?????There is a NEWER Red Dawn film than the 1984 one??? Red Dawn (1984) And this time it’s not the Soviets that invade Hillbillyland but it’s the… North Koreans???How on earth have I missed this gem? Which is the best football club in Greece?

Greek here and a supporter of Panathinaikos FC. In terms of honours, Olympiakos Piraeus FC leads the table with 30+ domestic championships, followed by Panathinaikos FC and AEK FC. Panathinaikos is the most reputable team internationally with A CL final, two CL quarterfinals and plenty final eight stage appearances, while AEK had always been regarded as the team playing the most attractive football from a technical and creative view. All the above are Athens based teams. Each team has a specific reputation, political affiliation and cultural impact. All the above have repeatably been found (with proof) to manipulate scores, by referees and at different periods, one has the political favour over the other three, with Olympiakos most notably been pointed as a team that has been pushed by the system in a permanent base. Olympiakos fan base is a socialist core, Panathinaikos is a center-right core and AEK is center-left/communist core, although there are blends.

What do Greeks of Greece and Cypriot Greeks think about each other?

I'll offer my input from the Greek Cypriot perspective:-We like to make fun of mainland Greeks by making them say weird words that are native to Cypriot Greek vernacular. It's done in good spirit though.-We often view mainland Greeks somewhat too talkative. I think it's backed by the illusion of pace due to standard Modern Greek "rolling on the tongue" more so than Cypriot Greek.-We mock (in good spirit always) Cypriots that try to talk like mainland Greeks. Because standard Modern Greek is a formal language here and not used much in everyday life, trying to speak like a mainland Greek sounds "fake".-As Nick Nicholas mentioned, we use the term "καλαμαράες" for mainland Greeks. They think it's derogatory so they assume we insult them, but it's just a reference to the way they speak. "Πουshτοκαλαμαράες" is a "friendly insult" like mainland Greeks use "μαλάκα" a lot.-There's a somewhat false view that mainland Greek women are "easier" than Cypriot women. That is a view that arose due to lots of Cypriot Greeks studying in Greece, so they assume this limited student-life contact with Greek women is representative. From my own experience with mainland Greeks, most Greek women are as hard to win over as Cypriot ones.-We are extremely close with mainland Greek sports, media, entertainment etc. Cypriots go to Greek talent shows, support Greek football teams (even the national team), watch Greek TV programs etc. Greeks don't do it as much for Cyprus, except maybe for the talent shows and TV.
