How did Frederick Douglass' work impact and change history?

He helped stop segregation and slavery in America. And he once told a group of African American students from a school in Talbot County, Maryland, "What was possible for me is possible for you. Do not think because you are colored you cannot accomplish anything. Strive earnestly to add to your knowledge. So long as you remain in ignorance, so long will you fail to command the respect of your fellow men." Born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey to a slave mother and a white father he never knew, Frederick Douglass grew up to become a leader in the abolitionist movement and the first black citizen to hold high rank (as U.S. minister and consul general to Haiti) in the U.S. government.

What can we learn by studying history?

Studying history is a great opportunity to learn about events that have shaped the modern world and learn from the lessons of the past. More than that, however, studying history offers the opportunity to improve several skills that are very helpful in a number of careers.1) First and foremost, history is an opportunity to hone research skills. Much of the work in a history class consists of finding information and understanding how it fits into a larger narrative. Figuring out what are the central themes and which details will help to paint a complete picture. I worked for a while at a start-up and I remember when they asked me to do market research, I realized just how applicable the skills from my history classes were.2) A large part of history is to read between the lines and behind the text to understand why the author (or creator of any historical source--much of history consists of objects rather than books) is trying to make a particular point. History encourages people to understand the perspective that different people bring to their analyses and to understand why people interpret events in a particular way. This skill is very helpful and allows people to direct their skepticism in a particular area.3) History also teaches people to be better writers and helps them to write persuasive arguments. An important part of history classes is to teach people how to synthesize pieces of information and turn them into a thesis (in this case, meaning a central argument, not generally the document that students write in order to graduate from college and other higher degrees) and then convincingly back up that thesis. History students should have the ability to present the strengths of their own case alongside the shortcomings of alternative explanations. This was incredibly handy when I was working on my company's business plan.Do all history classes teach these skills? Absolutely not. Is studying history the only way to acquire these skills? Not by a long shot. Can studying history be a valuable academic pursuit? Absolutely!

Did Gandhi really say, "Be the change you want to see in the world"?

Often in recent times, great personalities are overrated with these bogus quotes. This Gandhi's quote is surely one of them. It turns out there is no reliable documentary evidence for the quotation. The closest verifiable remark we have from Gandhi is this:“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. ... We need not wait to see what others do.”Here, Gandhi is telling us that personal and social transformation go hand in hand, but clearly there is no suggestion in his words that personal transformation is enough! This falsified quote is also confirmed by Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi venting out his disappointment over people linking the name of Mahatma Gandhi with quotes which he never said or wrote. He also said “One needs to be careful, while using somebody’s name for a quote”It gives a completely different picture about that person’s personality. For example, ‘Be the change you want to see, Enough for everyone’s need not anyone’s greed, An eye for an eye will end up making the whole world blind, Western civilization is a good idea’ were not Gandhiji’s words.A true follower who've studied Gandhi with ease would say that these quotes are extraneous. So the next time you see people bragging Gandhi's quotes while preaching sermons, please take a minute to correct those jerks.!

Why is it important to know about our past history?

The study of history is important because it can tell us how we evolved. It can tell us what decisons worked in particular situations in the past and what didn't. This can be useful when taking decisions today in similar situations. We can also take inspirations from certain events to motivate us. For example, The Battle of Thermopylae, The Battle of Longewala, The Battle of Saragarhi. These events tell us how a few stood against many. They can serve as inspirations for people who find themselves outnumbered by their opponents (be it anywhere). Also studying why Empires collapsed may give us insights into how to efficiently run our countries. If the Germans had taken lessons from history, then during World War 2, they wouldn't have fought in Russia during the winter, like Napoleon did. Thus, the main reason behind why we should study History is to ensure that we don't repeat the same mistakes as our forefathers when History repeats itself.
