* "Maybe They're Magic" – Baker's Wife

What to sing for Into The Woods Audition?

Unless they audition states that you can pick a song FROM "Into the Woods", I wouldn't go with
"Giants in the Sky", but other than that, I would suggest a song from another Stephen Sondheim musical that would display your voice AND give you an opportunity to show your interpretative/acting skills. But avoid "Sweeney Todd"--it's probably going to have a lot of people picking audition songs from this one. Actually, "I Want to Go Home" from "Big" is a pretty good choice (though not by Sondheim), but only if you can actually sing it either in the original key, or at least find a copy of the sheet music with the key transposed to one that you can sing in.

Now, a big, big tip for auditioning for any Sondheim. Make absolutely sure your diction is flawless! This means the listener has to be able to understand every single word that you sing or there is little point of you singing at all. The songs in "Into the Woods" are part of the plot and storytelling, so it's crucial that the audience can understand the singer. A less than perfect musical tone is preferable than slurred and mumbled words, or a boring, flat delivery.

And I too want to encourage you not to eliminate yourself from participating in this musical by insisting that you must have a certain part. Sometimes, in community theatre, the director will cast people he has worked with before, or who he has seen in other productions. That's just the way it goes sometimes. So if you get cast in "just" a chorus part, think of it as an opportunity to show the director and other people in the theatre that you are hard working, responsible, and can learn your part and deliver a solid performance. Then the NEXT time you decide to audition, you might get a bigger part because they know you can be counted on.

You can also find some specific titles from Y! Answers.

Kind of avoid Tin Pan Alley though; he tends to list the same lists for every musical-related question out there. Some songs would be suitable, but others are don't come close.

Unfair Casting, Help?

Welcome to Show Business!
You would be surprised at how often this happens with Broadway productions, and don't get me started on movies...
That's the way life is and it sucks because I'm sure your friend is great and I'm not shocked that the directors daughter got in. Is this a school production? If so, go higher, talk to the principal as school is about gaining skills and learning. Not snobbery and favouritism. Talking to the director will be regarded as flat out disrespect and he/she will take offense no matter what happens or what is said coming from the mouth of anyone under 20. A principal may make a difference but chances are, the casting won't change.
Be professional, practice and shine because with the right amount of energy, on opening, your friend could be a tree and she would steal the show and the audience will know if the director's daughter isn't...up to par.
Break a leg, remember--the show must go on!

Audition Song- Into the Woods- I want the witch?

Disney is not a good idea when auditioning for Into the Woods. Sondheim, who wrote ITW, has an incredibly distinctive musical style and there is no other composer who even comes close to his style. You should always sing a Sondheim song at a Sondheim audition, so here are some suggestions:
- The Miller's Son from A Little Night Music
- Ladies Who Lunch from Company
- Another Hundred People from Company
- Losing My Mind from Follies
- Not A Day Goes By from Merrily We Roll Along
- Wait from Sweeney Todd

Info on into the woods including cast list from biggest to smallest roles.?

I'm not sure about the Jr. version, sorry. And I also don't think the first poster has roles in the order you're requesting. Some roles are about the same, with stage time, songs, importance, etc. I would consider the 'leads" to be:
Baker's Wife, Cinderella, Witch, Baker, Narrator/Mysterious Man, Jack (and in that order)
Important but slightly secondary roles:
Rapunzel, Red, Two Princes/wolf (usually one of the princes play the wolf)
Smaller roles: Jack's mother, cinderella's step-mother, Florinda/Lucinda, Cinderella's father, Cinderlla's mother, Steward, giant voice-over, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Milky White. Most often Milky white is just a papier-mache cow or cut-out, but some productions have someone in a cow suit. ;)

Now, for the requirements of the roles, it depends on your voice type. Cinderella is a soprano, if you are a soprano you will be most comfortable with her or Rapunzel (who sings very high). Rapunzel is a small but still difficult role, in that she basically goes crazy and dies. The Baker's Wife is a large role that requires an excellent voice (mezzo/belt).

Really, just try to get aq copy of the filmed stage show with the original cast:
http://www.amazon.com/Into-Woods-Bernadette-Peters/dp/B00001PE59

you might be able to rent it or get it from your local library. These are the "standards" for the roles, the measuring stick, if you will. Of course all productions have their own interpretations nut this should give you the best idea of what the "best" way would look like.
