How does one become an art consultant without a degree but 30+ years of success as a fine artist?

First of all, the experience is already a very good selling point. However, it depends on which kind of art consultant: art career consultant for artists, or art collection consultant for buyers? Or evaluation for auction house? It’s really depends! Most of the time you need to have some kind of prestige (I don't like this word but it is what it is) over the ‘mass’. Meaning you have to have a PhD usually if you want to work with museums as consultant, or a MA or MFA if you want to work with galleries. Without a degree, the best is to work with other artists - most of fine art artists also don’t have an art degree. Only 16% of artists have art degrees. Meaning, you can very well work with them as art career consultant.

What are the best resources available (books, websites, movies) to become an art consultant?

Beyond those resourses mentioned, you must possess an innate obsession for, and love art, to be able to describe art on your own passionate terms. In other words, you”ve gotta feel art.Study art history extensively, visit art show openings, go to art musuems, and also have conversations with people who are into art.

What is the difference between an Art Dealer and an Art Consultant?

In broad terms, art dealers buy and sell fine art to collectors, museums, corporations and other art dealers; art dealers typically own fine art inventory and obtain consignments from artists and collectors. In contrast, to avoid a conflict of interest, art consultants don't own inventory, in order to provide objective advice.  Many art consultants know what they are doing and have decades of experience, knowledge and provide meaningful guidance, while others should be avoided. Since there is no art market regulation in the United States, there is no universal definition applicable for all art dealers and all art consultants.  Accordingly, there is no mandate stipulating all art dealers must own inventory, just like there is no mandate requiring that all art consultants provide effective advice. The fact is sone art dealers are great at buying & selling art, while others are lousy; many art consultants provide keen advice and can share historical performance data, while other consultants have no expertise whatsoever. Before making any decision to buy and/or sell fine art from an art dealer or engage an art consultant, you should ensure these professionals have requisite connoisseurship and credentials.Joseph K. Levene, is President, Joseph K. Levene Fine Art, Ltd., and has 3 decades multifaceted fine art experience as art collector, art dealer, fine art executive and selling art online. http://josephklevenefineartltd.com

What does starving artist mean?

someone who is an artist as a career choice and doesn't make any money off of his or her art work.

Can I advanced my career as a Makeup Artist by becoming a Mary Kay Consultant?

I would advise you to not get tangled up in Mary Kay. They will claim that they are not a pyramid scheme (look up what a "pyramid scheme" is if you don't know what it is), but in fact they are the very definition of one: you have to buy a ton of products when you first start out, and you buy them from a consultant who's one step higher than you and that's the biggest way she makes any money. That means that she is running herself ragged trying to find people to recruit. It's not about the makeup or skincare products at all -- it's about getting people under you to support you. If YOU want to make any money from Mary Kay then you will have to become what she is and run yourself ragged trying to find people to recruit so that you can sell them their boatload of products that they "need" as new Mary Kay consultants (they will not sell most of the products that you sell them, same as you when you started).
I hope that this shows you that this is not a legitimate business and that it's unlikely that anything good will come of it. One of my mother's friends got into selling Mary Kay and wound up with a ton of product she couldn't sell and she refused to go around recruiting people just to make a bit of money herself because she saw the immorality of it. I really don't mean to be a downer, I just saw your post and remembered these things.

I do have some positive advice :D Pixi2woo on YouTube is a professional makeup artist who has gotten a great boost from joining the YT beauty community. You could try making a name for yourself in that way. She also has a great website (currently being redone, back up in about a week) that showcases her talents and experience and shows great "before and after" pictures. She uses models that are up-and-coming (inexperienced) that will do a photo shoot to get some exposure. You could try doing that as well. You and the model (and the photographer) would then have more in your portfolios to show future clients that you have what it takes. Plus, it's a great learning experience for all. Check out her website when it comes back up, I thinks it's Tanyaburr.co.uk or something to that effect.

Hope that your professional makeup artist career gets going soon! Best wishes :)

Absolutely.  I know many very successful liberal arts majors in business and finance. Most complemented their liberal arts degree with MS in Finance, MBA, or similar.   Many colleges provide for double major.Technical writing is another career path.
