What does the word ‘Islam’ mean?

“Islam” comes from the root word “Salama”, literally “S-L-M”, which means “Submit”, “Submission”, etc. This root word defines an entire class of words, most notable of them being (along with ‘Islam’) “Salaam”, or “Peace”.Islam, however, does not literally means peace. In our case here, “Islam” is not rooted from “Salaam”, but from “Aslama”, which is the root word in the noun form. “Aslama” means a number of things, and varies by context:to betrayto let sinkto hand overto leaveto surrender, to submitIn our case, we look at case 5, “to submit”, or, as it would make more sense in English language, “ The act of Submitting”(I say this because the word is in noun form). From case 5, we can derive a further verb form, which is the word we all know, “Islam”.So, “Islam” is the verb form of “Aslama(The act of submitting)”, which means that Islam’s adequate translation in English is “Submitting”. Submitting to what? In the religious context, “Submitting to the will to God”.
