What Dog Breed Is Best For Me And My Family

What is the best breed for a family guard dog?

If you want a dog that will actually do something then you need to purchase a fully trained, professionally trained dog (they start at $10,000-100,000). Almost all of those dogs will be German Shepherd Dogs or Belgian Malinois, with a handful of Dutch Shepherds and other breeds. If all you really want is a dog that will bark and serve as a deterrent then get whatever largish dog, preferably short-coated and/or darker in color, that fits your family's desires in a dog and your ability to care for one. A Labrador Retriever or a Boxer or a Siberian Husky or a Bullmastiff or a Greyhound will probably all be just as effective.Note that unless the dog is highly trained so that they bite if and only if commanded to do so either the dog (1) will bite when it shouldn't (i.e. the meter reader, girl scouts selling cookies, your cousin getting in late) or (2) they won't bite when they should (they will turn tail or stand there looking dumb while you are attacked). It is a horrible idea to get a dog with the assumption or goal that it will be "naturally protective" and then expect it to not harm the innocent and actually protect you from the guilty.

What's the best dog breed for me?

Gosh if you would like a calm gentle dog i would recommend a mature one past the age of 3years. Reason being that i have an almost 7 year old english pointer and he is very calm and laid back but that's because he is now turning 7....

I would recommend a non-dominant probably already neutered male since you already have a lot of males and they tend to be a lot more calm and less barky than females.

I would recommend your local mixed breed from your local shelter or craigslist. Most large breed dogs are prone to hip displesia unfortunately....

Try a borzoi- low exercise requirements, and beautiful

What is the best breed of dog for military families?

I know some of you suggest waiting until I am settled.. This is as settled as military life gets though..We are scheduled to be here for 3 years..then who knows after that..we are good pet owners though. We have a cat that we have had for five years now all in the military and she has traveled with us 6 times from east coast to west coast we would never leave her behind. We feel we can offer the same(a family forever) to a dog right now.

What type of dog would be best for me and my family?

Have you looked into Labradoodles or Goldendoodles? (They're not technically a breed, but mixes between Labradors and Poodles, and Golden Retrievers and Poodles)
Poodles are really intelligent and energetic dogs and they have a coat which does not shed which means that allergy sufferers are less likely to have a reaction. Golden Retrievers are playful, friendly, outgoing, and gentle dogs. Mix a poodle and golden retriever together (Goldendoodle) and more often than not you get a happy, friendly, sweet-natured and energetic dog with fur that doesn't shed! You get a similar outcome with a Labradoodle.

If you're not interested in a mixed/"designer" breed, than you should perhaps look into a Standard Poodle or a Portuguese Water Dog. Neither breeds shed and they are both energetic and playful, which I think is something your family probably needs. c:
