What Editing Apps Do The Use

What video editing apps do you use?

I work in the field of Scripted Television for the most part of my working life, but I also I edit documentaries, feature films, music videos, concert films and the occasional commercial. I live in Ireland but most of the work I do is for clients in South Africa, UK, America and France.I use FCPX and Adobe Premiere, however my preferred NLE is FCPX and I use it 95% of my time editing. Its fast, reliable, optimised for the Mac so runs smoothly. The magnetic timeline is revolutionary as are the trackless timelines.Apple rewrote the book on what editing in the digital age is all about and FCPX in my opinion is the best at handling new media. It was designed from the ground up only a few years ago whereas other NLEs are built on technology and software from up to decades ago and are modified with updates still using that tech. For instance XML workflow in FCPX is far superior to Premiere Pro which still uses FCP6 XML from 2008 whereas FCPXML is a brand new shiny efficient form of the language. Avid looks today like it did when it was first built 30 years ago. They do still do the job in this century quite well though. But…Having said that there are currently a few limitations around collaborative workflows which will be addressed soon hopefully.Over the years since it was launched it has grown from strength to strength and has added more and more functionality in the process. 3rd party plugins and add-ons enhance the experience even further with big companies like LumaForge, Light Iron, Intelligent Assistance, Marquis Broadcasting and Digital Rebellion (to name a few) throwing tons of money into building and developing software around FCPX.Apple themselves are constantly refine the language FCPX is written in to make it more efficient and faster with every update. Which bings me to another reason I Like FCPX. I bought FCPX 10.0 in 2011 for 300 dollars. We are currently sitting on 10.4.3 and I haven’t paid for a single upgrade. Premiere Pro is subscription based as is AvidBut ultimately I prefer to use it because it’s fun. I am so much faster in FCPX than I am in the other NLEs that I have been using since 1988 and so I get more time to concentrate on story rather than editing as such. We have gone back to editing at the speed of thought.

What are some cool editing apps to use on a phone?

I personally don't use the photo processing parts of instagram and EyeEm, even if take a picture with my phone. The apps I personally use are:Lightroom mobile: basic retouching + some filters.Snapseed: basic retouching + tons of filters.Disclaimer: I haven't used snapseed in a very long time so I don't know if they've changed anything. One advantage of lightroom vs snapseed is that lightroom allows you to organize your pictures, export multiple images, and the most important one is that you can always go back to an image you retouched and change the settings. This is called nondestructive processing. For example you increase the brightness of an image. You then leave it for 2 months to gather dust and go back and bring down the brightness, your picture is still there. This makes retouching a photo easier when you have manipulated multiple settings. With most other apps once you retouch a photo and save it there is no way to go and change just one thing. There are 3 different photoshop apps available as well: photoshop express, photoshop fix, photoshop mix. I have yet to use them so I can't comment on how good or bad they are.
