What Examples Make Odysseus A Good Leader

Do you think Odysseus is a good leader?

Do you think that Homer wanted us to think that? Look at it from this point of view. The Hellenistic Gods themselves were a mixture of the sacred and the profane. They were seen as reckless, lacking character, impulsive, always feuding with each other. Odysseus himself regardless of his human weaknesses becomes a pawn to these gods as he attempts to make it back to
his tiny offshore kingdom. He makes it back because he is helped along the way because one the gods finds his character worthy of helping. I would say he was a good leader, under very harsh coditions who didn't give up and forged a strong relationship with the correct dieties to get him home.

Examples of how odysseus was a great leader?

Odysseus was not a great leader at all. He was a tactician. Every thing he did was to get him home. His warriors and sailors did not get home

What are some examples of leadership in the Odyssey?

I believe the Odyssey is riddled with examples of bad leadership.Ulysses takes ten years to complete the objective of returning home.He spends seven years with a woman who is not his wife.He loses all his men.His heroic trait is his cunning intelligence which he uses in deceptive speech; he suffers from hubris such as when he leaves the island of Cyclops claiming that nobody can defeat the ‘Great Ulysses’ which offends Posideon.

In the book the odyssey what makes odysseus a good leader?

Odysseus not only led his men through all their trials such as the Sirens, Polyphemus (the cyclops), and the enchantress Circe, he was clever, cunning, and fearless. Odysseus made decisions not for himself but for his men as well. For example, he didn't leave his men on the island of the Lotus Eaters when they had no desire to go back to Ithaca; he tied them onto the boat and left the island behind. He was hell bent on returning home with as many of his men as possible even though they continually disobeyed him. Odysseus was one of history's greatest leaders and this is part of what makes him an epic hero.

Odysseus...a bad leader essay. help with quote!?

There is a quote from the crewman Eurylochos in book 10, lines 425-450 or so. Odysseus is urging his men to go up to Circe's palace now that he has "tamed' the Goddess. Eurylochos is still suspicious and says.......

" So too it happened with the Cyclops (death & suffering), when our companions went into his yard and the bold Odysseus was of their company; for it was by this man's recklessness that these too perished".

Basically Eurylochos blames Odysseus for the Cyclops episode and he is afraid that the crew will suffer again because of Odysseus' s insistence on staying on the island of Circe.

Why was Odysseus a bad leader?

I truly admire Odysseus however in terms of leadership his skills are definitely lacking.Firstly every single member of his crew dies, literally everyone he had hundreds of men in his command when he departed Troy but by the time he washed up on Calypso’s island they were all gone.He didn’t even realise that his crew mate Elpenor had died and left without him, Elpenor had to remind him in the underworld! Now Odysseus does at times show good leadership, his clever thinking gets them out of Polyphemus’ cave and he does show a genuine compassion for them.Still this isn’t enough far too often he is careless, hubristic and simply isn’t prepared for the mistakes his men will make. His leadership in Ithaca however is admirable he rallies his supporter in an inspiring way to take down the suitors and win back Penelope.

In the Odyssey, how was Odysseus fearless?

I think you're on the wrong track. There is nothing heroic about being fearless, the heroic ideal is found in overcoming and acting in the face of fear. So, it's examples of courage you're looking for, not fearlessness. There are numerous examples. In fact nearly every exploit relays some facet of Odysseus' courage.
