What Happened During The Attack On Raleigh

Was Walter Raleigh a pirate?

Walter Raleigh was a pirate, earned the Queen Elizabeth of England of the great treasures taken away from Spanish ships...

What happened during the attack on Raleigh?

I guess you mean the battleship.

The ship was struck by a Torpedo at 7:55. In the bombing (after 9:00) a bomb hit her. They pumped the water out and the ship did not sink. There were no death amongst her crew. She was repaired and returned into active service in 1942

HOw many ships went down in Pearl harbor attack?

More vessels than 8 battleships were knocked out of action on 12/7/41. A total of 6 ships were sunk but 4 were repaired and refloated.

Also sunk or heavily damaged were the Helena, Oglala, Raleigh, Cassin, Shaw, Vestal, Curtiss, and Downes.

The Honolulu, Pyro, Tangier, Dobbin, Henley, Helm, Bagley, Aylwin, Hull, New Orleans, and Cummings had slight damage

Why do the English give their pirates the title of Sir (e.g. Raleigh, Drake)?

In England (and now in Britain), men were knighted because they had performed notable services for the crown and country, and caught the eye of the monarch (Elizabeth I in the case of Raleigh and Drake). This entitled them to be addressed as ‘Sir Walter or ‘Sir Francis’ (or ‘Sir [Christian name]’; they’re never addressed, incidentally, as ‘Sir Raleigh’ or ‘Sir Drake’ or ‘Sir [surname]’. This is one of those little peculiarities of protocol that the English/British used/use to wrongfoot foreigners).Raleigh was knighted in 1585, mainly for helping in the suppression of Irish Catholic rebellions. Drake was knighted in 1581, mainly for claiming California for England during his circumnavigation of the world. They weren’t knighted for their piracy, and it wasn’t the norm to give pirates the the title ‘Sir’; it just so happens that that was what happened to these two. It’s easy to see why other nationalities think of them as pirates, and many British people nowadays would agree. However, at the time their exploits were seen as beneficial to the country, and they were national heroes. Both were in some ways admirable even by today’s standards, despite their more dubious claims to fame.

Why was Raleigh chosen as North Carolina's capital when a coastal port town would seem like it would make more sense for the time?

Raleigh was planned and built specifically to be the state capital, so it wasn’t a city or town that was chosen, it was more of a site. It was moved inland to be more central to all the populace of the state, that was a major concern. Even counties were required by law to have their county seats convenient to all, thus many county seats are “courthouse towns” in the geographic center of the county. The fact that naval attack could occur with the previous capitals was no doubt a factor. The site of Raleigh being at the “fall line” was also a factor, this was a driver of industry early on, dams and water-driven power. I’d imagine weather had something to do with it too, flooding during and after hurricanes is a fairly frequent thing even today.

Has anybody on Naked and Afraid ever been bitten or attacked?

I got bit on the junk by a banana spider. Nearly lethal but came out fine and it wasn’t shown in the episode.
