What Hard Drive Should I Buy For My Nas

Compatible hard drives for a LG NAS N1B2?

Im trying to find a Hard Drive to use for a LG Network Storage unit. I've found a Hitachi IDK Deskstar that works, but CDW is out of stock. does anyone know any other Hard Drives that work well with the LG NAS N1B2. Thank you.

Do all the hard drives in a NAS have to be the same size, such as a 4TB next to an 8TB?

A NAS is really just a server that connects to a network. It is not unlike any other computer in that it has an Operating System and internal components such as disk drives, memory, networking, etc. Underneath the covers, they are managing disks exactly like you would on a linux box or something like that. So, the answer to the question is it really depends on the NAS you are talking about. They all have varying levels of features and capabilities. Some NAS units absolutely require drives to be identically sized. If it is only capable of presenting one Volume to the network, this is good because dissimilar drives create wasted space. More advanced NAS units can present multiple Volumes, so you can deal with have sets of differently sized drives. It just depends on the NAS device.

Do you have to format the hard drive when set up Synology NAS? Can I set up Synology NAS using the hard drives contain exsisting files? Also, can I use different size of hard drives (like 2 6TB + 2 8TB)?

You can use drives that already contain data and they may be of differing sizes. The thing is, you need to configure the NAS as JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks). If you are going to be doing mirroring of drives or setting up any other type of RAID configuration, you will want to set it up with clean, identically sized drives for optimal results. For example, if you are going to mirror two drives with differing capacities, you will only be using the space equivalent to the smaller drive. In RAID 5, 6, and other configurations, the smallest disk in the entire set is the determining factor. So, by using drives with different capacities, you will be wasting some of the space from all of the larger disks. If your chosen RAID configuration utilizes striping, your data is going to be spread across all of the drives in the set and the redistribution of existing data on the drives you are using is not something most of these devices handle after the fact. Then there are factors such as parity data in some forms of RAID which will utilize the space of at least one entire drive. Or hot spares that will take over and automatically rebuild the set in the event of drive failures.Because of all of these potential complications, you will definitely find an easier time by using empty drives of identical sizes for most NAS usage unless as stated in the first paragraph, you are just going to use the device to access a bunch of individual drives.

How can I use Google Desktop to index my NAS (Network hard drive)?

I have a network hard drive and I would like to index
it using Google Desktop. Can I do this?

I know enterprise edition can be used on a server to index all computers in a work group but I would like to do it peer-to-peer.

What is the largest drive I can use in my Acer Altos EasyStore NAS?

As you can buy these NAS boxes with exactly the same firmware as mine and 4 x 1Tb drives, I already know for a fact they can support >500Gb drives. I've now bitten the bullet and added 1 x 1.5Tb drive and the NAS happily added the full capacity. I've now ordered three more and will load it up and see if it can cope!
