What Has The Internet Come Too

How did the internet come into existence?

It's a long history but briefly it was a network in the late '60's used by universities to exchange information. Eventually the government developed more of it (DARPA), known as DARPANet, then the medical communities stepped in for more, then students, companies, random individuals, then more and more smaller networks tied in to make larger networks, and it has evolved this way to what it is today for 40-plus years. This is seriously boiled down. You can get a much more detailed, and interesting, history, on Wikipedia.

As a note, Al gore had nothing to do with it.

Is there still too much information not on the internet?

The Internet provides access to an unfathomable amount of information, so much that it’s reasonable to say that the Internet has too much information. Still, this is only a tiny amount compared to how much information is not accessible through the Internet.Consider all the things written before computers were available. While Google has done a commendable job of scanning books, their collection is a tiny percentage of all the books in the world. That information is simply unavailable digitally.Even if you just include digital information, there are reams of data collected in government repositories that are not connected to the Internet for security reasons, untold petabytes of data in membership/subscription databases that Google cannot index, and who knows how much information that’s slowly decaying on old floppy disks and tape drives. Is this too much information? I don’t know, but it’s more than what you can get to by using Google.

What are your thoughts about this statement "Internet, where religions come to die"?

The internet might enable people who already want to change, but it's also a medium for ideology and propaganda.  The statement sounds very "nineties", when people were saying the internet will "change everything", just because any machine can display a page written on any other machine.Having a medium does not determine how it is used and what results occur.  Free data communication does not equal free speech, does not equal free thinking.  People are too intelligent to live so deterministically.

How has the internet been more helpful or harmful to your life?

Well, if the question is in the context of my life (me, myself and I), then certainly it is more helpful than harmful. It is in fact a part of my life, and possibly the same for all (Ok, 99%) of the Gen Y in the world. We grew up in an era whereby technology advances so fast that most people stopped their attempt to track the changes (except the extreme nerds who may be your professors).

Let me elaborate on how it improved my life. The internet allows me to access the world with my magic fingers; get updated with the latest news, steal or adapt great ideas from unknown geniuses from unknown places (the nicer word is "borrowing" but who cares), buy branded goods not available locally, bank online, keep in touch with buddies through msn/yahoo, expand my social circle while maintaining contact with current friends through facebook, fry my brain competing in real-time online games with overseas mates, try to get freebies from online promotions and contests (such as party rights with Avenue Q?), download (paid) music, watch (free) funny video clips online, blah, blah... The list is too long. Did I forget to mention about stealing a few minutes break at work to check my yahoo mails on my ebay purchases? ;) We only have 24 hours a day and a lot need to be done within this limit.

Sure, the internet has its evil. Some kids get to learn the making of bombs through some obscure online sites and went around venting their teenage angst. Some Japanese depressed souls gather for group-suicide through the help of a sick forum. It also allows people who hate you to send you viruses in an attempt to screw your life (etc, etc). Then again, these people must be quite messed up in the first place? Why blame the internet? There is certainly more than one way to harm people, kill yourself and seek revenge, even without the help of the e-connection. The internet may be part of my life, but it is not all of my life. I have friends and family who help me maintain sanity and I don't think I offended anyone that badly to send me a virus intentionally. The internet is a tool, we humans make the decision on how to utilise it.

Now, can I party with ya after the long explanation? ;P

What is diffrence between internet and intranet?

An intranet is an internal private network inside a company, a school, or another organization that uses Internet-based technology. For example, you might have a web based database for employees to access private information. If it is a true intranet, it will not be accessible in any way from outside the company. The benefit is that the Internet-based application technology makes it accessible 1) from most any platform and 2) from most any office in the company - without too much slowdown from WAN links.

As to which came first, the Internet came first. That's where the web technology was born that intranets use. However, do keep in mind that local networks were around long before the Internet, but they used different protocols and application technology.

Will the Internet ever become too big?

I believe that the internet has, in a sense become eutrophic. Similar to a pond that is too oxygenated and therefore chocked with NEW plant life, that cannot be sustained due to the limited size of the pond, which then stagnates and dies….. The good news is that where once there was a brightly sparkling pond there will be a lovely, verdant meadow that on warm June evenings will be filled with fireflies…Which, as we all know, inspire imaginations. Leading one to wonder; What's next!
