What Is An Education Doctorate

Masters or Doctorate in Education?

If I get a Masters in Education I can become a principal or? However, I can be a professor and a principal with a doctorate. What are the pros and cons? Which degree would you get?

What is the differences between the PhD and Doctorate in education?

Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D., an abbreviation for the Latin "Philosophiæ Doctor" or alternatively "Doctor philosophiæ", D.Phil. (originally from the Greek Διδάκτωρ Φιλοσοφίας, meaning "Teacher of Philosophy"), is a doctoral degree granted at the completion of extensive academic work in a particular field of study. Although originally granted exclusively for work in philosophy, today Ph.D.s are awarded in nearly all fields of the sciences and humanities. In most countries Ph.D. students go through two distinct phases. In the first phase students typically complete required courses and write some form of comprehensive examination. The successful completion of the examination marks the beginning of the second phase and entitles the student to refer to him or herself as a Ph.D. candidate. The major task of the candidacy stage is the writing and defence of a major original contribution to his or her academic discipline. This contribution usually amounts to a written dissertation ranging in length, depending on discipline, from 50 to 800 pages. Dissertations typically consist of a comprehensive literature review, an outline of a methodology, and also include several chapters of scientific, social, historical, philosophical, or literary analysis.

In some fields, such as some specific branches of physics, a doctoral degree is practically essential for employment. In some fields, newly-graduated doctoral students are unlikely to find work as tenure-track professors and are compelled to undertake one or more postdoctorate positions.

How can a person with a doctorate in education (EdD) become a business professor?

Depending on the emphasis or major in the doctor of education program, it will be a business-centered degree. An EdD in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis in Organizational Development, for example, is a business degree although it is an EdD. An EdD in leadership is another business discipline which EdDs generally are. You would have to list your credentials on your CV. You would do well to write business-centered journal articles and/or have some kind of background in a business related discipline. Some schools will also want to make sure that your EdD program required a dissertation or that you wrote one. Not all EdD programs require a dissertation today. My current dissertation chair has an EdD. He’s reached senior status at the university. My doctorate is business focused. So is his. He is doing just fine. We have a great working relationship and I have asked him similar questions.Edit: Much of my doctoral program course wise has been very reminiscent of my MBA program. There has been more rigor in my doctoral program, but much of the information was represented to a degree in my MBA.

Is a PH.D higher than a Doctorate?

neniaf is *mostly* right...

A doctorate is the generic term for the terminal (or highest) degree in a field of study. A Ph.D. is one type of doctorate.

A Ph.D. is usually awarded in traditional academic subjects (English, math, chemistry, etc.). Ph.D.'s generally prepare people to continue on in academia, teaching and doing scholarly research. The other types of doctorates (D.F.A. in fine arts; Ed.D. in education; D.P.A. in public administration; J.S.D. in law; D. Eng in engineering; etc.--and there are a whole lot of others) are usually considered "professional" degrees, and are aimed more at preparing people to be advanced practitioners of a profession, rather than to teach and do research in that field. But that's a very messy and porous distinction--Ph.D.'s can and often do go to work outside academic and research-oriented jobs, and people with other doctorates do get jobs where they do research, and sometimes wind up in tenure-track faculty jobs. Also, just to further confuse things, in some fields (education, for example) you'll find some graduate programs that offer a Ph.D. as their terminal degree, and others that offer another doctorate in that same subject.

As for the Ph.D. being a higher degree than other kinds of doctorates...not really, or not as an absolute, undisputed fact. A doctorate is a doctorate. It's the highest degree offered in that field of study (or at least, the highest one your department awarded), and trying to rank them between different fields is kind of an apples-and-oranges comparison. A Ph.D. is generally considered more prestigious in academia, and people who want to get good tenure-track faculty jobs in most fields, or move up in university administration, are advised to choose a Ph.D. But outside the circles of university faculty and staff (and people who want to be them) who really know and care about the finer points of the academic pecking order, a doctorate is a doctorate, period.

Degree after doctorate?

I understand that you can double major, then perhaps masters, or maybe ever doctorate.

But after reaching doctorate, what type of degree would you get if you were to major in something completely different?

e.g.
I'm majoring in Foreign Language Education (concentrate in French language)
I go for my doctorate in French Literature.

Now I want to learn German. Would I go back to undergraduate school?

I finished my doctorate in education and I'm thinking of going back to get a master's in data science. Is this crazy?

“Crazy” is a matter of perspective. If you have a wife and two kids and not a lot of money, this might constitute crazy. But even then, if you had a plan to follow in which you could be reasonably sure of success, it wouldn’t be crazy. If it’s something you want to do and you don’t have children or if you had them but could provide for them easily, then it’s not crazy at all. What would be crazy is if you ignored what you really wanted to do. Then you might forever regret not trying. There would be part of you that was incomplete, unmet, unknown, not validated. If people are telling you you’re crazy for going for a master’s of something you’re interested in after a doctorate that’s in something you like perhaps less, they’re missing the point: your life is yours. You should be able to decide on what you want to do. The only people besides yourself who should have any say are people whom you’ve decided and committed to take care of, a.k.a. your wife and kids, if you have them.As a matter of fact, I think you’d be doing a great thing for yourself. With data science skills and an Ed.D., I think you’d have a relatively unique perspective on certain matters, including data science education.

Question about doctorate vs. PhD?

A doctorate is the highest degree awarded in a university. A PhD is a type of doctorate. PhD is the abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy. An MD is a Doctor of Medicine. An EdD is a Doctor of Education. There are many types of doctorates.

The PhD is the only type of doctorate that is recognized in every country, however. It has a long history dating back hundreds of years. PhDs began in Germany. Most other types of doctorates were created in the 20th century, and most were created in the US.

There are two broad fields of doctorates: research degrees and professional degrees. The PhD is a research degree. A person gets a PhD by conducting a major research project and answering a question that no one has ever answered before. The MD is an example of a professional degree. A person gets an MD by learning how to be a professional physician. They do not have to conduct a research project.

In general, a person can get a PhD in almost any field of study. There is no PhD in medicine or pharmacy, because those are professions. People who want to conduct research in medical areas, however, can get PhDs in fields such as physiology, biology, etc. And while the EdD is always a doctorate in education, someone can actually get a PhD in education. Similarly, business students can get a DBA, Doctor of Business Administration, or a PhD in business.

DBAs and EdDs are research degrees, but they are usually focused on the application of their research. Someone getting a PhD can do research with practical application or research that is theoretical.

Is an Ed. S degree considered a doctorate degree?

I am looking into school psychology programs. You must have a Bachelors, Masters, & Ed.S (Education Specialist Degree given when you go a year beyond MA) to become certified. Does an EdS give you the "Dr" title or do you have to go all the way & get a Phd?
Just curious because some universities have the EdS listed under doctorate but I did not think it was really a doctorate level degree...

Is there another education level above PhD?

Most Commonwealth (Australia, UK, Canada, and NZ) universities offer what is called a higher doctorate, each university's most prestigious degree and one that ranks above a PhD. Typically a person seeks a higher doctorate mid-career, having held a doctorate such as a PhD for 10+ years. The material submitted is a collection of major publications during that period. Naming conventions vary, but they might be known as a Doctor of Letters/Laws/Science/Economics and are generally restricted to past or current staff members or graduates of each university.
