Who are some of the most exciting composers in contemporary classical music?

In my opinion, the best new classical music is coming out of Finland. To those already mentioned by others I would add Einojuhani Rautavaara (in my opinion the finest composer alive today--listen to his 7th Symphony for starters), his student Kalevi Aho, and Essa-Pekka Salonen. John Harbison is my favorite living American composer--thoughtful, unpretentious and endlessly inventive. Michael Nyman, John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse and Aaron Jay Kernis are also quite excellent and Glenn Branca brilliantly bridges the gap between classical and pop music. Harrison Birtwhistle is probably the foremost living British composer. Giovanni Sollima is a wonderful Italian composer specializing in cello music. Then there's the Egyptian composer Sherif Mohie Eldin. David Del Tredici (American) and H.K. Gruber (German) are kind of one hit wonders--Del Tredici for "Final Alice" and Gruber for "Frankenstein!" Both pieces are worth a listen, however, as is Phillip Feeney's "Dracula."  And believe it or not, the serious music of Peter Schickele (aka PDQ Bach) is very nice as well.I've limited myself to living composers, but let me shill a little for three of my favorite 20th century composers, all deserving of more attention: William Schuman, Alan Hovhaness, and Rued Langaard. Listen to Schuman's 3rd Symphony, Hovhaness' Magic Mountain, and Langaard's eccentric masterpiece, Antikrist for starters.

I would like to learn about and enjoy contemporary African music. Right now my favorite music is Bach, Mozart, Chopin and the blues. What would be some good music to start listening to?

I  cannot claim comprehensive knowledge of modern Afropop, but I can cite a few great albums.  Youssou N'Dour's "Egypt" is a remarkable synthesis of Egyptian salon music with the sacred-song traditions of the Sufi Muslims of Senegal.  Toumani Diabate's "Mande Variations" demonstrates this master's virtuosic command of the kora, the West African harp associated with the griots or storytellers of Mali.   Diabate's "Boulevard de l'Independance" is a lively album that throws African-American soul music into the mix.  For more information about contemporary African music, visit Afropop Worldwide (Afropop Worldwide)  which has a wealth of podcasts and articles on both African pop music and music of the African diaspora (African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, etc.).  Follow them on social media or subscribe to their email newsletter.

What is so Egyptian about the Symphony No. 9 by Hermann Nitsch?

From looking him up, it is really really difficult to take a performance artist who happens to be a 'sound artist' at all seriously on the same plane as lifelong dedicated classical musicians.

Too, an artist such as Nitsch has craft at least as much in his primary area as he does in generating false excitement over 'events,' and the hyperbole around and about any of his own work - in short, a Public Relations specialist.

A lot of performance art is 'associative,' both from artist and as perceived by audience.

I readily listen with concentration to other quite lengthy classical works, the older repertoire as well as the contemporary classical.

Morton Feldman's "Piano and String Quartet" is about one hour long. Some of his other pieces run several hours. He is a master at keeping them (to me) interesting enough to hold my attention.

Michael Gordon's "Decasia" runs well over an hour, but again, the music holds my interest all the way through.

Just by reading up on Herr Nitsch - who, by the way, is listed in Wikipedia ONLY as a visual artist / performance artist, that article not mentioning his sound-art efforts At All (perhaps one indication of the general public-popular opinion of Herr Nitsch's "Symphonies?")

I think 'you had to be there' - in the gallery space with the sound as part of an installation or performance, to probably find anything of much interest in Nitsch's take on music, even a little bit.

I checked his musik zur 38.malaktion - Seite A Composers before him have done similar, including the non-specific graphic scores for the players, and gotten similar and far better results.... but they had a much fuller, dedicated grip on music, how it works, and notation, those who made graphic scores resorting to them as a particular exercise or solution, vs. someone who 'just doesn't know much.' But those are true and dedicated musicians, not painters dabbling in music, as is, one can suppose, der Herr Nitsch :-)

"Performance artist" / "sound artist" does not always equal "composer."

... and I'm with rdenig_male here, that "Major Pseudo" would be a good rank for Nitcsch as a composer at least :-)

ADD: Guessing the most Egyptian thing about the work is the artist's conceit that it is 'Egyptian.'

Best regards.
